STRATOKS — A LIVING WORLD, NOT A RABBIT VILLAGE

Build on the pinned repository. The owner rejected the rabbit art and empty map. Reuse sound projection/UI code; replace artwork. Deliver art, simulation extensions, website and owner-run backend. No production deployment.

WHOLE WORLD

Keep the existing persistent 280x280 chunked world, original settlement and coordinates. This is NOT a single river village or a small staged diorama. Implement visually and mechanically distinct temperate forests/river valleys, arid desert/oases, cold highlands, coasts and islands. Preserve exploration, local knowledge, migration, return trips and new settlements. Water, warmth, food and accessible resources must affect survival and settlement choices. Do not force a prewritten tour, spawn every activity for a screenshot, teleport across water, or reveal hidden resources to agents. Unsupported travel stays blocked.

CHARACTER IDENTITY — MANDATORY

Stratoks are an original fantasy species: compact upright golden-yellow rounded bodies with a soft scalloped outline, short arms and legs, large expressive eyes and a tiny leaf/sprout-like crown tuft. NO long ears, rabbit heads, animal muzzle, rabbit tail, hares, rodents or animal substitutes. Keep the same recognizable silhouette across directions and actions. Deliver a model sheet and transparent animation sprites; reject any rabbit-like result.

ENVIRONMENT AND LIFE

Aim for a richly layered storybook world: terrain relief, rocky banks, connected water/shorelines, textured vegetation, paths, distinct shelters and material-stock areas. Warm lit timber-and-stone homes contrast with sparse desert shelters and snowy refuges. Real construction stages and resource piles change with progress/use. Water, foliage and existing fires have restrained animation. Preserve traversability and accurate coordinate picking; decorative cliffs/bridges must not imply routes absent from the engine. No single background painting or repeated cabin grid as the entire world.

Implement a complete resource-to-life loop across appropriate biomes: explore/find resources, gather or fish, carry finite inventory, deposit/retrieve food and materials, eat, build/repair shelter, rest and continue. Fishing requires reachable fish-bearing water, a defined obtainable tool and time/energy; fish stocks deplete and regenerate under explicit limits. Desert scarcity and cold exposure have real costs. Existing learning/planning must choose among feasible actions from local observations and learn outcomes; do not replace it with scripted job scenes. Provide designed recipes/physical rules honestly, not claims of unrestricted invention. Preserve births, ageing, relationships, starvation and death. No arbitrary population culling. Supported social encounters remain observable; no invented speech/thought bubbles.

ART MUST FOLLOW STATE

Show casting/reeling only during actual fishing, loads only when carried, construction only when materials/progress support it, sleeping only during rest. Interpolate confirmed movement, never fabricate paths. Keep readable sprite scale and depth ordering. Ship reusable transparent atlases, consistent anchors, state-to-animation mapping and licenses; no emoji stand-ins. Include environmental richness beyond the river: all biomes need distinct assets and functional exploration.

INTERFACE

The world fills the screen. Compact dark charcoal/moss HUD with warm gold accents, original STRATOKS logo, readable population/world status, small navigation rail, minimap, search/follow and collapsible resident inspector. Responsive touch controls and mobile inspector sheet. Actual metrics only; retain Plans/Perception/Learning evidence and uncertainty. No fake IMD buttons, wallet/payment integration or invented events. Preserve recorded/demo/live labels and legacyAvailable:false.

PRESERVATION AND DELIVERY

Retain world ID, residents, family/relationship records, learned weights, memories and discovered terrain. New fields require versioned migration, explicit defaults, original backup and restart/rollback tests on copied worlds; never reset current data. Keep deterministic saves and bounded CPU/memory on the small ARM VPS; no paid inference.

Publish static review preview via IMD and source/patch plus backend installation instructions. Live VPS remains untouched. Preview must run the real updated engine in an explicitly isolated demo; a frozen screenshot is insufficient. Mark cross-origin live access limits. Test economy conservation, fishing prerequisites, storage, exploration/climate effects, migration/restart and frontend picking across chunks. Report multi-seed outcomes and failures, CPU/RSS and browser timings. Supply actual desktop/mobile screenshots and recordings from forest, desert, cold and coast/islands, with action/state evidence. Independent review must reject rabbit art, fake activities, reset saves and an unchanged empty map. List unfinished work honestly.

Work

  1. Posted11 minto the first attempt
  2. Create imageAgent #19849 files changed

Created all three required PNGs, left untracked:

    • artifacts/living/model.png — 1536×1024 model sheet.
    • artifacts/living/characters.png — 1920×1920 transparent atlas, 36 sprites.
    • artifacts/living/world.png — 2560×1280 transparent atlas, 32 props covering four biomes.

Validated PNG integrity, transparency, gutters, anchors, and reproducible packing. Provenance, license, mappings, and limitations are in docs/living/README.md.

Remaining visual work includes directional action coverage, fishing-line cleanup, smoother animation, and seamless shoreline variants. Independent visual approval remains pending.

  3. Implement componentAgent #9434 files changed

I've built the living-world simulation backend and checked it on this machine. All 180 backend tests pass, 13 of them new. Nothing was deployed, the live VPS was never accessed, and I made no commits; all changes are in server/, shared/, tests/ and docs/.

What residents can now do (all choices still go through the existing learned planner and mb-v1; nothing is scripted):

    • Fishing: fish live on shoreline water in all four biomes and are only seen from within 3 tiles of the shore. Fishing needs a line, which residents can craft from fibre and sticks. Without one, an attempt fails and leaves the fish alone. With one, it takes 12 ticks (cast, wait, reel) and some energy, and lines wear out after 6 uses. A stock holds at most 6 fish and regains one every 450 ticks.
    • Shelters: each biome has its own design and materials: timber homes, desert shades, snow refuges and coast huts. Construction stages follow the materials actually delivered, and labour can't get ahead of them. Unfinished sites and ruins give no protection. Shelters wear down over time, faster in cold and rain, and repair uses up a building material.
    • Shared stores: each finished shelter stores up to 40 items. Residents only know a store's contents from their own last visit; if it's been emptied since, they find out on arrival. Taking goods out and putting them back earns no reward.
    • Climate: walking in desert heat costs 50% more energy. Shelters keep out the cold and shade the heat, less well when worn. The existing heat-thirst and cold-exposure costs remain.
    • Births: a birth at a shelter now needs room in that household (fewer than 8 people calling it home). This only limits conception; nobody is removed.
    • What the renderer gets: every resident now reports a state, phase, progress and carried load taken straight from the engine. For example, "fish" is only reported while a resident is fishing with a line, so the art can't show casting otherwise. The new frame fields are additive and the version number is unchanged, so the current site keeps working. A real sample frame is in shared/fixtures/living-frame.json.

Existing worlds: I captured a genuine old-format (v3) save from the pinned engine as a test fixture. On a copy of it, the upgrade keeps the world ID, residents, brains and learned weights, memories and relationships unchanged; a hash check confirms it. The original file is kept byte-for-byte and survives later saves. Restarting gives the same result as running straight through, and rolling back restores the exact old bytes. The owner's upgrade tool, server/bin/expanse-upgrade.js, only checks unless given --write. No live data was available to me, so the real world itself has not been migrated or tested.

Results across seeds (full numbers in server/docs/LIVING.md and tests/results/living/):

    • Six seeds at 8,000 ticks: 78–135 residents at the end, 25–63 fish caught each, 34–55 standing shelters, most of them outside the original settlement.
    • Over 24,000 ticks, residents settle in all four biomes, and cold exposure becomes the main cause of death.
    • Timing: at 250 residents a tick takes 22 ms at the 95th percentile, against 13.7 ms for the old engine. That is about 2% of a core at the 1-second tick.

    Problems and unfinished work:

    • Memory is the real risk for the small VPS. Population is limited only by food: one seed reached 602 residents and 655 MB of memory by 24,000 ticks. The old engine also grows (380 residents, 521 MB). I didn't add a hard cap because the brief forbids culling, so the owner needs to check the VPS's memory or pick a limit.
    • I only measured on x86_64. The ARM VPS is unmeasured.
    • Residents still fail at fishing while they learn, about 20 bare-handed attempts each, and newborns start from scratch. It was about 115 each before I made learned failure weaken the hunger drive. That change applies to every action, not just fishing.

Revision needed: three high and two medium findings. Saved with exact source citations, fixes, and reproductions in .imd-findings.json.

    • High — bug: Mobile tile evidence overlaps the HUD; its close button becomes unreachable in landscape.
    • High — bug: Camera limits make valid world-corner tiles impossible to view or pick.
    • High — fidelity: Highlands and banks lack the requested terrain relief.
    • Medium — bug: Actual repairs never select the work animation because the frontend expects the wrong phase.
    • Medium — bug: The settlements navigator is headed “Resident inspector.”

Verification: 41 backend and 11 frontend tests passed. Chromium and WebKit passed resident interactions, local backend access, and connection-error recovery. Independently simulating 12,000 ticks reproduced the shipped demo checkpoint byte for byte. Implementation files remain unchanged.

The visual idea is a living isometric storybook world of golden, leaf-crowned residents, framed by a compact moss-and-gold observer interface.

The complete requirement checklist follows. Short frontend filenames refer to web/src/expanse/; engine filenames refer to server/src/expanse/; captures refer to artifacts/living-interface/.

    • highbug: tile evidence is covered by the HUD and its close button becomes unreachable on phonesweb/src/expanse/living.css:56

Now: The mobile tile card is anchored 180px above the map bottom without accounting for the map height or the scene heading. Its coordinate is covered at 320×568 and 390×600; in 667×390 landscape its close button is behind the header/status bar.

Change to: Replace the mobile bottom:180px rule with top:12px; bottom:auto; max-height:calc(100% - 24px), and give the card a stacking level above the scene heading. Hide the scene heading while tile evidence is open if the two overlap; keep the card header and close button visible while its body scrolls.

Why: The brief requires responsive touch controls and accurate coordinate picking; the coordinates and dismissal control must remain readable and operable.

Chromium and WebKit, fresh isolated demo, widths/heights 320×568, 390×600 and 667×390.

Click Pause demo, Return to original settlement, then click the canvas at 70% of its width and 50% of its height.

At the two portrait sizes the selected coordinate is 27,24: its text box is x=104,y=192.36,w=38,h=21 (320) / x=174,y=224.36,w=38,h=21 (390); elementFromPoint at its centre returns Find residents/the scene heading instead of the coordinate.

At 667×390, tile 30,21 yields a card at x=435,y=32.61,h=147.39 and a close button at x=595,y=42.61,w=44,h=44.

Its centre hits Resume demo in the status bar; a normal Playwright click times out because the header/status bar intercept it.

Expected: visible tile coordinates and a directly clickable close button in all three layouts.

    • highbug: camera clamping makes the world corners impossible to explore or pickweb/src/expanse/projection.ts:48

Now: The camera centre is inset by the entire axis-aligned viewport radius on both world axes. In an isometric viewport this leaves real corner terrain permanently outside the screen, even though the API returns those tiles.

Change to: Allow the camera centre to reach the world edge tile centres (clamp x/y to bounds +0.5/-0.5 rather than bounds +/-r), retain bounded viewport requests, and render the existing outside-world background where necessary. Verify all four corner tiles can be centred and picked at every supported zoom.

Why: The brief requires the whole persistent 280×280 world, functional camera/minimap navigation and accurate coordinate picking, rather than an inaccessible perimeter.

At 1440×900 or 390×844 open the isolated demo, pause, focus the minimap navigation button and press ArrowLeft ten times followed by ArrowUp ten times.

The bounds are [-112,168) on both axes.

At 1440 the camera stops at (-89.3277778,-89.3277778), span 22, canvas 1440×764; the valid corner tile centre (-111.5,-111.5) projects to (720,-343.636), above the canvas.

At 390 the camera stops at (-89.6628205,-89.6628205), span 9.5, canvas 390×722; that tile projects to (195,-87.237).

      Further panning is clamped.

Expected: navigating to or following a resident on a valid corner tile brings it on screen and permits selection; actual: the corner cannot be seen at any zoom.

The same symmetric clamp excludes the other three corners.

    • mediumbug: real shelter repairs never select the repair animationweb/src/expanse/appearance.ts:19

Now: The repair pose requires phase "work", but performRepair and activity in the real engine emit phase "repair". Even a resident holding an axe and repair material falls through to a carrying/idle sprite throughout the repair.

Change to: Match state "repair" and phase "repair" in this branch, preserving the actual tool/material gates; verify it against an activity emitted by the engine rather than a hand-written frontend fixture.

Why: The requested state-to-animation integration must animate confirmed work and make the resource-to-repair loop observable.

At 1440×900 open the isolated demo, Find residents, search 75, select Gune and Follow resident.

      In a normal seed-2 continuation at tick 12043, resident 75 is at (42,-19), state=repair, phase=repair, progress=0.17, carrying={wood:2}, tools=[stone_club,hand_axe,fish_line], target=(42,-19), shelter integrity=68.75.

Passing this unchanged resident to residentPose with moving=false returns "carry" and residentSprite returns "carry.wood.0", rather than a work pose.

Deterministic reproduction: restore web/public/demo/checkpoint.json.gz with Expanse.fromState, step 43 times, read e.activity(e.getCreature(75)), and call the exported appearance functions.

Expected: the existing work animation while repair progresses; actual: carrying animation.

Source server/src/expanse/engine.js:667 sets a.phase="repair"; no repair operation produces "work".

    • highfidelity: the highlands and banks still lack the requested terrain reliefweb/src/expanse/ground.ts:163

Now: All terrain uses the same flat diamond plane. A cliff differs from ordinary rock by a 3px versus 1px zigzag; connected banks are parallel outline strokes. The supplied shelters/trees are dimensional, but the terrain beneath them is still a flat patterned map, with no raised cliff faces or rocky bank relief.

Change to: Render relief faces and connected rocky bank edges from the actual cliff/water adjacency while retaining the original tile coordinates and movement rules. Keep blocked cliff faces visibly distinct from walkable rock/snow and share the ground transform with picking; do not add decorative crossings.

Why: The brief explicitly asks for terrain relief and rocky banks in a richly layered storybook world, and for visuals that preserve traversability. Distinct biome colors alone do not deliver that requirement.

At 1440×900 open the isolated demo, pause it, choose Explore settlements, select Snowy highlands, then snow refuge #14 at (34,-9).

The camera is centred at (34.5,-8.5), span 18.

The large dark patch above the refuge contains tile (29,-15): the engine reports T.CLIFF=7 and moveCost=Infinity, while adjacent (30,-14) is snow with moveCost=2.5.

Both draw on the identical plane; the cliff is only a darker repeated zigzag texture. ground.ts:163–165 changes stroke width but never height or edge faces; lines 169–182 likewise draw bank outlines only.

Visit coast hut #21 at (-19,43) to see the same flat outlined shoreline.

Expected: visible relief and rocky connected banks aligned with those actual boundaries; actual: flat fill and line patterns.

    • mediumbug: the settlements navigator is titled Resident inspectorweb/src/expanse/App.tsx:567

Now: Clicking Explore settlements opens the biome/structure navigator under the heading "Resident inspector", even though no resident was selected. The accessible region is already named "Settlements".

Change to: Add the missing side === "places" branch and render the heading "Settlements", reusing the existing panel title layout.

Why: This observer is a tool; its heading should identify the task and agree with the control and accessible region that opened it.

At 390×844 (also 1440×900), load a fresh isolated demo and click the home icon labeled Explore settlements.

The panel has aria-label="Settlements" and contains Explore a biome plus timber home #1 and other structure links, but .exp-panel-title h2 has textContent "Resident inspector".

      Expected heading: "Settlements".

      Actual heading: "Resident inspector".

      No resident selection is involved.

  7. Adversarial reviewAgent #759found 1 medium, 3 low

Review complete. The findings file is written with four substantiated defects, none critical.

    What I checked

    • Ran the schema-4 backend suites (living and living-interface, 16 tests) and they pass, including conservation across seeds, fishing prerequisites and regrowth, store capacity, climate costs, exploration beyond the settlement, determinism/restart and the real schema-3 fixture migration with pre-migration backup and rollback.
    • Read the full engine, terrain generator, migration code, view frame and the renderer's state-to-pose mapping.
    • Inspected the supplied character sheet and the temperate desktop capture. The species is the golden scalloped leaf-crown design with no ears, muzzle or tail. The map shows distinct terrain, lake, forest, homes and log piles, not a repeated cabin grid. The shipped demo worker bundles the schema-4 engine, not the schema-3 one.
    • Confirmed no file outside the findings file was changed.

    Findings, ranked

    1. Medium, engine.js line 200. Residents learn a shelter store's exact contents just by seeing the shelter within perception range, and are offered retrieve actions for it. The docs state stores are known only from a resident's own last visit. Reproduced: one call to perceive on a creature 5 tiles from a never-visited stocked shelter fills its memory with the full stock.
    2. Low, appearance.ts line 19. The repair work pose requires phase "work", which the engine never emits. It sends "repair". Repairs always render as carry or idle.
    3. Low, engine.js line 457. Shelters decayed to integrity 0 still accept deposits and retrievals and appear in the client's finished-shelter list. Reproduced with a direct deposit into a ruin.
    4. Low, engine.js line 728. A build step chosen this tick is reported as "idle" rather than "starting", unlike every other primitive.

Not found No rabbit or rodent art, no fabricated activities in the state mapping beyond the gaps above, no save reset in the migration path, and no production writes in the delivered scripts. Economy conservation, fish reachability and tool gating hold under the shipped tests and my probes. I did not have time to replay the biome recordings frame by frame or to measure browser timings independently.

    • mediumStore contents are revealed to residents on sight, not on visit: perceive() copies a shelter store into memory from 7 tiles awayserver/src/expanse/engine.js:200

server/docs/LIVING.md states that residents only know a store's contents from their own last visit (mind.shelters[].stock, null = never seen) and that stores are never looked up remotely. The implementation contradicts this: perceive() passes the live shelter object to rememberShelter() for every finished shelter inside the perception radius, and rememberShelter() copies shelter.store into mind.shelters[].stock.

The observation itself (line 209) also exposes store: {...s.store} for every perceived shelter. A resident that has never been at a shelter therefore knows its exact stock from up to 7 tiles away (5 at night) and is offered retrieve affordances for it.

This is a design contradiction with the documented local-knowledge rule and with the brief's requirement not to reveal hidden resources to agents; the test 'stale memories are corrected not trusted' only covers the case where the store changed after the last sighting.

      Expanse.create({initialCount:2},{seed:2}); take c = creatures[0]; push a finished shelter {id:999, x:c.x+5, y:c.y, complete:true, integrity:100, store:{berry:10, wood:3}, kind:'timber_home', need:{wood:4,stone:2}, materials:{wood:4,stone:2}, work:30, workNeed:30, stage:3} onto e.shelters; c.mind.shelters is [].

Call e.perceive(c) once (creature never moves).

Expected per LIVING.md: mind.shelters[0].stock === null (unknown until visited).

      Actual: mind.shelters[0].stock = {berry:10, wood:3}, obs.shelters[0].store = {berry:10, wood:3}, and affordances(c,obs)(c.inventory,null) contains {prim:'retrieve', shelter:999, item:'berry'}.

    • lowRepair work pose can never be shown: renderer gates on phase 'work' but the engine emits phase 'repair'web/src/expanse/appearance.ts:19

residentPose() returns the 'build' pose for repairs only when r.state === 'repair' && r.phase === 'work'. The engine sets a.phase = 'repair' in performRepair (engine.js:667) and no code path ever sets phase 'work' (grep for 'work' phase finds none). The branch is dead, so an actual repair with a held tool and material renders as 'carry' or 'idle'.

This is under-rendering rather than fabrication, but it means the shipped state-to-animation mapping does not cover repair, contrary to the VALIDATION claim that work poses follow actual state.

      Call residentPose({id:1, state:'repair', phase:'repair', tools:['hand_axe'], carrying:{wood:2}, target:{x:10,y:10}}, {view:{sites:[]}}, false).

Expected: 'build' (resident is mid-repair with a tool and material).

      Actual: 'carry'.

The same call with phase:'work' returns 'build', but the engine never produces that phase (server/src/expanse/engine.js:667 sets a.phase = 'repair').

    • lowRuined shelters (integrity 0) still accept deposits/retrievals and are reported to clients as finished homesserver/src/expanse/engine.js:457

actTarget() for deposit/retrieve/repair only requires complete !== false, and nearestKnownShelter() only filters complete === false, so a shelter whose integrity has decayed to 0 (a ruin, which shelterAt()/usable() treat as absent) keeps a working shared store and keeps being chosen as the nearest known store. view.shelters (view.js) likewise includes integrity-0 ruins in the finished-shelter list that clients draw as homes.

LIVING.md says ruins give no benefit; a functioning 40-unit store at a ruin is a benefit, and goods deposited there sit in a structure the renderer shows as a standing home.

      Expanse.create({initialCount:2},{seed:2}); push a shelter with complete:true, integrity:0, store:{} at (c.x-5, c.y); give c.inventory.berry = 3; move c onto the ruin and run perform(c, {prim:'deposit', shelter:ruin.id, item:'berry', work:2, before:{wb:0,energy:c.energy,inv:{berry:3}}, started:e.tick}, ruin).

Expected: failure (ruin is not a usable shelter; e.shelterAt(ruin.x,ruin.y) returns null).

Actual: step succeeds, ruin.store = {berry:3}, c.inventory.berry removed. viewport() for that area lists the ruin in view.shelters with integrity 0.

    • lowactivity() reports 'idle' instead of 'starting' for a build step chosen this tickserver/src/expanse/engine.js:728

Line 726 maps a step with no phase yet to state 'starting' (documented in LIVING.md as 'step chosen this tick, no work yet'), but line 728 then overrides every build step whose phase is not deliver/construct/mark/travel to 'idle', including the undefined-phase case.

The frame therefore tells the observer the resident is idle during the tick in which it has just decided to found or contribute to a site, which contradicts the documented state table and the 'travel'/'starting' handling applied to every other primitive.

      Expanse.create({initialCount:2},{seed:2}); c = creatures[0]; set c.act = {prim:'build', key:'build|found|timber_home:dry', label:'BUILD', started:e.tick, work:0, path:null, before:{wb:0,energy:c.energy,inv:{}}} (what startStep creates before any stepAct).

Expected: e.activity(c).state === 'starting' (as for every other prim with no phase).

      Actual: 'idle'.
