STRATOKS — CORRECTNESS, RICHER AGENCY AND A LIVING SOCIETY

Continue STRATOKS: an original evolving society inspired by Plaything/Thronglets. Deliver measurable mechanisms, not claims of consciousness or human intelligence. Preserve the whole 280x280 world: forests, desert/oases, cold highlands, coasts/islands, exploration and migration. No production access/deployment, paid inference, tokens or payments.

FIX ALL EIGHT OPEN DEFECTS FIRST

  1. Tile-evidence HUD overlaps/close-button failure on small/landscape phones: safe-area-aware panel, reachable close/Escape/focus return.
  2. Camera clamping prevents exploration/picking at world corners: correct isometric bounds/viewports without hiding valid edge tiles; test all four corners, zoom/aspect ratios and negative chunks.
  3. Terrain remains flat: actual connected cliff faces, rocky bank relief and readable heights using authoritative terrain/adjacency. Share projection and picking; no invented passable crossings.
  4. Repair pose expects phase "work" but engine emits "repair": map actual emitted activity; retain tool/material gates.
  5. Settlements navigator title wrongly says "Resident inspector": correct heading.
  6. Exact store contents leak from distant sight: only actual visit/interaction updates stock knowledge. Distant sight reveals appearance, not stock; memory stays stale until revisited. Prevent indirect planner/state-query leaks.
  7. Ruins at integrity 0 function as stores/finished homes: disable normal use/protection, preserve contents, expose ruins truthfully; recovery requires repair or explicit nearby salvage.
  8. Newly chosen build step reports idle: consistent starting/working/progress states. Reproduce defects; deliver tests and a resolution table. An accepted review is not a resolved finding.

MORE THAN FISHING

Extend existing learned planner and mb-v1 rather than replacing them. Add persistent bounded goals and subgoals (needs, curiosity, safety, social ties); interruption by danger/changed conditions, resumption and alternative strategies. Do not assign permanent scripted professions or a global colony director.

Use extensible object/material capabilities and action preconditions/effects/costs. Residents combine primitives such as inspect, move, collect, carry, place, combine, use, tend, repair, share and signal. New objects participate through properties, not bespoke brains. Physical rules/recipes are designed; experience-derived preferences/predictions must remain learned. Capabilities do not reveal recipes.

Implement and test at least three additional functional chains: plant/tend/harvest with climate/water constraints; prepare/cook existing food using fuel/heat with conservation; voluntarily help provision/repair another resident's shelter based on local needs/relationships. These demonstrate reusable actions; do not force their sequence. Retain fishing, exploration, tool wear, construction, rest, reproduction, ageing and death.

LOCAL COMMUNICATION AND INDIVIDUALITY

Add bounded local signal production/perception with neutral glyphs or tones. Signal associations and receiver responses arise from repeated local co-occurrence and observed outcomes; no globally pretranslated "food/danger" dictionary or scripted English dialogue. Respect distance, attention, uncertainty and false/misunderstood signals. Keep individual experience, personality and trust. No shared omniscient memory. Show signal/response history and confidence, not invented thoughts. Label this limited learned signaling.

WORLD PRESENTATION

Keep golden leaf-crowned Stratoks; no rabbit ears, muzzles or tails. Improve character/building scale, depth ordering, terrain transitions and environmental layers across EVERY biome. State-driven farming/cooking/helping/repair animations; no fake activity props. Preserve mobile controls, follow/search/minimap and scientific inspector. Show goals, observations, predictions, outcomes and communication evidence. Hide unavailable features.

VALIDATION AND DELIVERY

Preserve live world identity, residents, weights, memories, relationships and terrain; migrate copies with versioned defaults, exact original backup, restart/rollback tests. No resets/culling. Bounded CPU/memory on the small ARM VPS; benchmark honestly.

Use multiple fixed seeds plus changed/depleted resources. Compare learning enabled/frozen and communication enabled/disabled; report failures, causal effects and action/strategy diversity, not just attractive videos. Verify material conservation and no social-signal/reward loops. Reproduce evidence with deterministic replay.

Deliver source/patch, reproducible build, working isolated updated-engine demo, static IMD review preview, screenshots/recordings across biomes and phones, raw tests/timings and owner deployment instructions. Separate review from structural acceptance. Unresolved high defects or missing mechanisms must be explicitly listed, never advertised as complete.

    Created transparent RGBA PNG atlases:

    • Terrain: 1536×1536.
    • Activities: 1254×1254.

Included 72 cell mappings, anchors, provenance, validation, and a visual review table.

Unresolved: activity fringe/gutters, stray terrain fragments, scale consistency, and seamless joins. These remain review assets.

Both cleanup calls returned: timed out awaiting tools/call after 300s. Saved revisions were inspected and checked.

I didn't commit. The previous imd … commits were made by the harness, so I've left the working tree for the upload step. Every changed path is inside server/, shared/, tests/ or docs/.

    Summary

The three engine defects are fixed and the new mechanisms are in. All 196 tests pass, including 13 new ones in tests/agency.test.js; the log is in docs/agency/results/test-run.txt. Some of the new mechanisms work in tests but did not show up in the simulations. Those gaps are listed below.

Engine defects (6–8), each with a test that reproduces it:

    • 6, store contents seen from a distance: residents no longer learn what's in a store just by seeing the shelter. Only visiting it (deposit, retrieve, salvage, repair, or finishing the build) updates what they remember. Old memories stay out of date until they visit again, and residents are no longer offered "retrieve" for stores they've only seen from afar.
    • 7, ruins: deposit and retrieve at a ruin now fail, and its contents are kept. Residents no longer treat remembered ruins as homes or stores. The contents can be recovered by repairing the shelter or with a new nearby "salvage" action. Views list ruins separately, so old clients don't draw them as homes.
    • 8, build step showing idle: a newly chosen step now shows starting. A 1,500-tick check confirms idle appears only when a resident has no step at all.

New mechanisms, built on the existing planner and mb-v1:

    • Object and material properties (capabilities.js) decide only which action a resident may try, not what happens.
    • Plant/tend/harvest, limited by soil, temperature and water.
    • Cooking that uses up fire fuel and converts food 1:1.
    • Voluntary provisioning and repair of another resident's shelter. A resident only knows whose home a shelter is by seeing that person rest there, and helping has no built-in reward.
    • Persistent goals (at most 4 per resident) that can be interrupted and resumed. A strategy that fails twice for a goal gets dropped for an alternative.
    • Six neutral glyphs as local signals, with limited range and attention, and some misheard. There is no built-in reward for signalling, and credit to the sender is capped.
    • Migration 4→5 was tested on a real schema-4 save (new fixture tests/fixtures/expanse-v4). Residents' identity data is unchanged, remembered store contents are kept as they were, the original bytes are preserved, and restart and rollback work. The owner's dry-run upgrade also passes.

Results (docs/agency/ENGINE.md, raw numbers in docs/agency/results/):

    • The item count balanced exactly in all 14 runs (3 seeds × learning on/frozen × signals on/off, plus 2 runs with food depleted).
    • With learning on, residents plant 4–19× more than frozen ones. But frozen populations grew slightly larger over 3,000 ticks, so learning doesn't help population here.
    • Signals had no measurable benefit. The average payoff residents learned from responding to a glyph is about zero.
    • No resident cooked in any run. Fires are rare: 2 lit in 8,000 ticks.
    • No resident provisioned anyone naturally. Repair help happened 5 times in 8,000 ticks.
    • Schema 5 uses about 1.9× the CPU per tick: 7.6 ms vs 4.0 ms at the median with 100 residents. I measured that on this x86 machine. The ARM VPS hasn't been benchmarked; the doc gives the command for the owner to run there.

    Not done in this assignment:

    • Defects 1–5 and all world-presentation work (animations, inspector panels, biome art). Those need changes in web/ and dist/, which are outside my allowed paths. The engine already sends the data the client would need, and old clients still work.
    • No screenshots or recordings.
    • The shipped demo still runs the schema-4 engine and needs rebuilding during integration.

All of this is also listed in the doc.

  5. Site content checkAgent #809found 2 low, 3 info

Review complete. The export can be hosted: nothing critical or high was found. The findings file holds five advisory entries, and no repository file was changed.

What was read. Every file in dist/ that will be served: index.html, the main bundle and the demo worker bundle, the stylesheet, both config JSON files, the art manifest and all five WebP sheets, the two demo checkpoints and their manifests, the six licence files, the share image, logos and favicons. I also read the source they were built from (main, Router, expanse App, Map, Inspector, AgencyEvidence, transport, demo worker, art and renderer modules) and the engine files the worker bundles.

What the scripts do. The main bundle loads expanse-config.json, starts a module worker that fetches the gzip checkpoint, verifies its SHA-256 against the manifest, and runs the engine locally. The only outbound host is the owner's VPS, and only after a visitor presses Connect live, as a plain GET with credentials omitted. There is no eval, no dynamic import, no iframe, no redirect, no tracker, no wallet provider call, and no seed-phrase or key prompt. The checkpoints contain no addresses, paths or secrets. The art is the golden leaf-crowned species throughout. No third-party name, logo or franchise reference appears in the export, and the art licence states the OpenAI generation provenance honestly. The demo manifest hash matches the shipped checkpoint, and the bundle contains the current source strings, so dist is built from this tree.

    Findings written to .imd-findings.json:

    • Low: the hosted licence folder lists wagmi, viem, Coinbase wallet SDK, bip39 and ws as runtime dependencies, and ships a RainbowKit notice, though none of that code is in the bundle.
    • Low: the static page still offers Connect live to the owner VPS even though its own README says the static origin cannot pass that server's CORS policy. The brief asks for unavailable features to be hidden.
    • Info: web/package.json and web/src/wallet.tsx keep unused wallet dependencies and code that nothing reachable imports.
    • Info: dist/world-config.json is published but never read by any hosted script.
    • Info: the worker bundles the engine's visitor wallet bookkeeping, but its message handler accepts only start, pause and frame, so it is unreachable. Recorded as confirmation of no unintended wallet flow.

Not verified. I did not rebuild the bundle from source, since no node_modules are present and the time budget did not allow an install. I did not send any request to the owner VPS, so the CORS outcome of Connect live is inferred from the README rather than observed.

    • lowHosted third-party notices attribute wallet libraries that are not in the exportdist/licenses/dependencies.json:13

dist/licenses/dependencies.json (lines 13, 83, 263, 273, 323) and dist/licenses/THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt (header line 2: "This conservative list includes runtime peer/type dependencies") present @coinbase/wallet-sdk, @scure/bip39, viem, wagmi and ws as the client’s locked runtime dependencies.

None of them is in the hosted scripts: dist/assets/index-BIRmkZRo.js and dist/assets/demo.worker-CNX2Ezex.js contain no wagmi, viem, coinbase, eth_requestAccounts, personal_sign, signTypedData or eth_sendTransaction strings, and the only entry chain is main.tsx -> Router.tsx -> expanse/App.tsx. dist/licenses/rainbowkit.txt is likewise shipped for RainbowKit wallet marks (docs/ASSETS.md) that do not appear in the bundle, and rainbowkit is not in web/package.json or web/package-lock.json.

Over-attribution is harmless to host, but a reader of the licence folder is told the page ships wallet-connector code it does not ship. Advisory only.

Open dist/licenses/dependencies.json and search for "wagmi" (line 273) or "@coinbase/wallet-sdk" (line 13).

      Then run: grep -c -i -E "wagmi|viem|coinbase|eth_requestAccounts" dist/assets/index-BIRmkZRo.js dist/assets/demo.worker-CNX2Ezex.js.

Expected: notices describe what is hosted.

Actual: both counts are 0 while the notices list the packages as runtime dependencies.

    • infoSource still declares unused wallet dependencies and an unreferenced wallet moduleweb/package.json:15

web/package.json lines 15, 16 and 18 keep wagmi, viem and @coinbase/wallet-sdk as runtime dependencies, and web/src/wallet.tsx (303 lines) remains in the tree, but nothing reachable from web/src/main.tsx imports them (Router.tsx imports only ./expanse/App; the expanse modules import react, ../icons, ../Modal, the engine and local files). This is why the hosted bundle has no wallet flow, which is the intended outcome.

The leftovers only inflate npm ci, the licence generator output above and the audit surface. No hosted effect.

      grep -rn "from "../wallet"|from \x27../wallet\x27|wallet.tsx" web/src/expanse web/src/Router.tsx web/src/main.tsx returns nothing; grep -c wagmi dist/assets/index-BIRmkZRo.js returns 0; yet web/package.json line 15 lists wagmi.

    • lowStatic export exposes Connect live to the owner VPS although the page says a static origin cannot use itweb/src/expanse/App.tsx:17

The hosted bundle (dist/assets/index-BIRmkZRo.js, string st=\https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io\``) embeds the owner VPS URL and renders a Connect live button in recording mode (App.tsx lines 507-514) plus a Connect live world form in Choose world (lines 902-938). The request is a plain GET to /api/expanse/frame with credentials omitted (transport.ts line 38), so it is not a wallet or asset flow.

But README.md line 52 states a static export cannot change the server’s CORS policy, and expanse-config.json ships startMode demo, so from the IPFS gateway origin the control is expected to fail with “Live access is unavailable from this origin” unless the owner allowlists that origin. The task brief asks to hide unavailable features; the remembered server URL is also written to localStorage (lines 223-227).

      Advisory: disclosed, read-only, no secrets.

Serve dist/ over HTTP (node web/scripts/preview.mjs 4173), open /preview/, choose Open recorded preview, then press Connect live.

Observe a GET to https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io/api/expanse/frame?... in the network panel.

Expected per the brief: the control is hidden or disabled where live access is not available.

Actual: the request is sent from every visitor origin and, without a CORS allowlist, the notice “Live connection unavailable.

Showing a recorded preview.” is shown.

    • infoUnreferenced legacy world-config.json is published in the exportdist/world-config.json:2

dist/world-config.json (copied from web/public/world-config.json) holds empty httpUrl/wsUrl fields for the archived settlement client. No hosted script reads it: grep for world-config in dist/assets/index-BIRmkZRo.js returns 0 matches; the live bundle fetches ./expanse-config.json instead (App.tsx line 79). Harmless, but it is a stray file in a published export.

      grep -c "world-config" dist/assets/index-BIRmkZRo.js dist/assets/demo.worker-CNX2Ezex.js prints 0 for both, while dist/world-config.json exists.

    • infoEngine visitor wallet code is bundled into the demo worker but unreachableweb/src/expanse/demo.worker.ts:29

dist/assets/demo.worker-CNX2Ezex.js contains the server engine’s visitor bookkeeping (string wallet_harm_cap, per-resident wallets:{} objects in dist/demo/agency-checkpoint.json.gz). The worker message handler (lines 27-37) accepts only start, pause and frame, so no gift/harm/visitor method can be invoked from the page, and the main bundle never calls a wallet provider.

Recorded as verification that there is no unintended wallet flow; the dead code could be split out of the browser build to shrink the worker.

grep -o wallet_harm_cap dist/assets/demo.worker-CNX2Ezex.js prints one match; grep -c -E "visitor|gift|harm" web/src/expanse/demo.worker.ts prints 0; the handler at lines 29-31 lists the three accepted message types.

  6. Adversarial reviewAgent #57found 2 medium, 2 low

Review complete. Findings are in .imd-findings.json at the repository root. No tracked files were changed.

What I verified against the final tree

    • All 61 tests in the agency, regression and repair suites pass under Node 22.
    • Defects 4 to 8 are fixed in code: the repair pose maps the emitted repair phase with tool and material gates, the Settlements panel heading is correct, sight records shelter appearance only and stock is copied only on visit, ruins deny deposit/retrieve/protection and preserve contents with repair or nearby salvage as recovery, and a step without a phase reports starting.
    • Defects 1 to 3 have tests and screenshot evidence: safe-area CSS and a reachable close button in the landscape phone capture, focus-clamped camera with corner tests, and visible cliff faces and heights in the highlands capture. I did not run a browser myself, so these rest on the delivered captures and unit tests.
    • Item ledger conservation holds in the recorded ablation runs and in my own reruns.

    Findings, ranked

    • Medium: frozen mode is not frozen for signalling. A seed 3 frozen run with communication on still accumulated 82 association updates, 153 co-occurrence counts and 291 avoid-list entries while the outcome model stayed empty. The frozen arm of the communication comparison is therefore contaminated.
    • Medium: two of the three required chains never happen in engine-driven runs. Cooking and voluntary provisioning are zero in every recorded ablation row, the 8000-tick run, and my reruns. Only unit tests exercise them. The engine docs disclose this honestly, but the chains should be listed as not demonstrated rather than counted.
    • Low: the social goal closes after one interaction, so it churns hundreds of times per run and crowds the bounded goal history.
    • Low: stale wallet attribution in the shipped licence notices and web/package.json, merged from the specialist findings and reproduced.

    • mediumFrozen learning mode still writes learned signal associations, co-occurrence counts and strategy avoid-listsserver/src/expanse/engine.js:924

The engine documents mode: 'frozen' as the no-learning arm of the learning-vs-frozen ablation, and in that mode mind.model, mind.goalModel and trust indeed stay empty.

But three experience-derived structures are still updated before the learn guard: settleWatch() updates the per-glyph association n/payoff (line 924, the if (learn) check is on line 925), onRespond() adds co-occurrence categories via noteCooccurrence (line 915), and agency.js learnGoal() grows goal.avoid and goal.switched (lines 101-103) before if (!learn) return on line 104.

These are exactly the 'signal associations' and 'alternative strategies' the brief calls learned, they are persisted in checkpoints, and the inspector shows association confidence from a.n. The frozen arm of the communication comparison in docs/agency/ENGINE.md (row 's3 frozen+comm', mean learned response payoff -0.077) is therefore not a frozen baseline: association payoffs and strategy switching were learning throughout.

      node script: import { Expanse } from 'server/src/expanse/engine.js'; const e = Expanse.create({ initialCount: 24, mode: 'frozen', learning: false, goals: true, communication: true }, { seed: 3 }); e.run(2500); then sum over e.creatures of Object.values(c.mind.signals).map(a => a.n) and of the values in a.seen, and of g.avoid.length over mind.goals + h.avoided.length over mind.goalHistory.

      Observed: association n total = 82, co-occurrence counts = 153, avoid entries = 291, while Object.keys(c.mind.model).length and goalModel are 0 for every resident and totals.signalCredit = 0.

Expected in a frozen run: association n/payoff/seen and avoid lists unchanged (0), matching the frozen outcome model, or the docs must state that signal association learning is not frozen by this mode.

    • mediumCooking and voluntary provisioning chains never occur in any engine-driven run; only unit tests exercise themserver/src/expanse/engine.js:878

The brief requires at least three additional functional chains demonstrated by residents' own behaviour and asks the reviewer to 'reproduce actual engine-driven activities'. The plant/tend/harvest chain does occur.

The cook chain and the help-provision variant of the help chain do not occur in any recorded or reproduced run: docs/agency/ENGINE.md's own ablation table lists 'Help tend / provision / repair' as N / 0 / 0 for all eight 3000-tick runs and '0 cooking' for the 8000-tick seed-2 run.

The cause is upstream of performCook: a cook affordance is only offered when a lit fire with fuel >= 1.5 is perceived (lines 366-368), and fires are lit about twice in 8000 ticks, while provisioning (lines 350-355) requires c.mind.homes[o.id], which is only recorded when another resident is seen resting at its own home (line 208) and that resident is simultaneously thin.

ENGINE.md discloses the zero counts, which is correct and honest, but the requirement 'implement and test at least three additional functional chains' is only met at the unit-test level for two of the three chains. This should be listed as a missing mechanism in the delivery, not counted as a demonstrated chain.

      node script: import { Expanse } from 'server/src/expanse/engine.js'; const e = Expanse.create({ initialCount: 24, mode: 'learning', learning: true, goals: true, communication: true }, { seed: 3 }); e.run(2500); console.log(e.totals.cookedOut, e.totals.cookedIn, e.totals.heatUsed, e.totals.helped).

      Observed: cookedOut = {}, cookedIn = {}, heatUsed = 0, helped = { tend: 74 } (no provision, no repair).

Same for mode 'frozen' (helped = { tend: 5 }).

      Also docs/agency/results/ablation-3000.json rows for seeds 3, 5, 9 x {learn, frozen} x {comm on, off} and the depleted run all show cooking 0 and help provision 0.

Expected: at least one engine-driven cook (cookedOut non-empty) and one voluntary provision in the delivered evidence, or the chains listed explicitly as not demonstrated.

    • lowSocial goal is satisfied by a single friendly interaction, so it is closed and re-opened hundreds of times instead of persistingserver/src/expanse/agency.js:48

goalMetric('social') is the sum of positive relationship values. Any one successful socialize step raises the actor's relationship by +0.06..+0.1 (engine.js lines 615, 621), and a share by +0.1, so a social goal is 'achieved' after the first interaction and immediately re-created on the next decide while the resident is calm.

The result is a goal that is not 'persistent' in the sense the brief asks for: in a 2500-tick seed-3 run the goalStats show social achieved 337 times (learning) and 659 times (frozen) across 24-42 residents, far more than any other goal (curiosity 98/131, food 0, rest 1). goalHistory (bounded at 8) is dominated by social churn, so the inspector's goal history rarely shows the food/water/warmth/safety goals the brief wants evidenced. This is a calibration defect, not a crash.

      node script: const e = Expanse.create({ initialCount: 24, mode: 'learning', learning: true, goals: true, communication: true }, { seed: 3 }); e.run(2500); aggregate c.mind.goalStats over e.creatures.

      Observed: { curiosity: { achieved: 98 }, social: { achieved: 337 }, rest: { achieved: 1 }, water: { achieved: 1 } }.

With mode 'frozen': social achieved 659, curiosity 131.

Expected: a social goal that persists across several interactions (threshold well above one interaction's relationship delta), or a documented rationale for the 0.08 threshold.

    • lowShipped third-party notices and web/package.json declare wallet libraries that are not in the hosted bundledist/licenses/dependencies.json:273

Merged from the site_content_check specialist findings and reproduced. dist/licenses/dependencies.json lists @coinbase/wallet-sdk (line 13) and wagmi (line 273) as runtime dependencies, and web/package.json line 15 still declares "wagmi": "^3.7.9", but no hosted script contains any of these libraries. Readers of the licence folder are told the page ships wallet-connector code it does not ship, and npm ci installs unused wallet packages. Harmless to host; advisory only.

grep -c -i -E 'wagmi|viem|coinbase' dist/assets/index-*.js prints 0, while grep -n '"wagmi"' dist/licenses/dependencies.json prints line 273 and sed -n 15p web/package.json prints the wagmi dependency. Expected: notices and declared runtime dependencies match what is hosted.

    • highbug: repeated ground transfers earn acquisition reward without acquiring resourcesserver/src/expanse/engine.js:599

Now: carry returns a produced-item outcome without marking the pickup as a transfer. Repeatedly placing and carrying the same wood unit earns positive acquisition reward; nearby residents can also learn from the artificial outcome.

Change to: mark ground pickup as a transfer for reward and social-observation accounting, and distinguish transferred inventory from newly produced material while preserving inventory predictions. Add a regression that repeated place/carry cycles have no positive acquisition reward.

Why: the brief explicitly requires material conservation and no reward loops; the existing store-transfer protection leaves the equivalent ground-transfer route open.

Width: independent of viewport (engine also bundled into the browser demo).

      Create Expanse.create({initialCount:2},{seed:11}); give one resident inventory={wood:1}, hunger=10, energy=80.

From e.affordances(c,e.perceive(c))(c.inventory,null), choose the offered place/wood step; execute via a one-step plan and startStep/stepAct until completion.

Re-perceive and choose the offered carry/wood step on the current tile; execute it likewise.

      Repeat three cycles.

      Measured episode rewards are place/carry [0,0.52], [0,0.12], [0,0.12], while final inventory remains {wood:1} and totals.gathered remains {}.

These are planner-offered actions, with no new resources or need improvement.

Expected: transferring the same item between hand and ground supplies no repeatable acquisition reward.

    • highfidelity: signal senders learn receivers’ private outcomes outside perception rangeserver/src/expanse/engine.js:932

Now: settling a receiver’s 90-tick observation window directly updates the sender’s private signal model and sent-history credit using the receiver’s exact wellbeing gain. The sender need not be nearby, attend to the result, or receive feedback.

Change to: retain this global accounting only as observer telemetry. Update the sender’s learned model only through a local perceived response/outcome or a bounded feedback signal, with distance, attention and uncertainty checks; add a separated-sender regression.

Why: the brief requires individual experience, no shared omniscient memory, and learned signaling from repeated local co-occurrence and observed outcomes. A positive relationship is not evidence that the sender observed a result.

Width: independent of viewport; engine is bundled into the isolated demo.

Create Expanse.create({initialCount:2},{seed:11}); use the first two residents as sender and receiver, set both energy=100/hunger=50 and sender.relationships[receiver.id]=0.5.

Execute single-step signal plans (glyph=◇,ctx=none, key=signal|◇|none) until receiver hears one: seed 11 first hears signal #5 at tick 5, from (30,26), distance 6.

Execute receiver move/respond to the sender with that signal ID; arrival tick 12 creates a watch ending at tick 102.

Execute sender move/explore and then receiver use berry on self (one berry in inventory).

Actual sender walks to (18,28), 12 tiles away; receiver eats at (30,26) on tick 27.

No feedback is sent and neither sees the other.

At tick 102 call settleWatch(receiver): sender.mind.total increases by 0.5 and signal #5 sent-history credit becomes 0.3, despite being out of perception/signal range.

Expected: only the receiver learns its own outcome; sender learning requires a locally observed result or feedback.

    • mediumbug: opening a resident preserves roster scroll and clips the resident’s identityweb/src/expanse/App.tsx:582

Now: residents and inspector reuse the same scrolling container. Selecting a roster row retains its scrollTop, while the heading receives focus with preventScroll:true, so the newly selected resident’s name/age/position can begin above the visible inspector.

Change to: reset the panel scroll to zero when changing panel mode or selected resident, then focus the new resident heading after that reset. Preserve scroll only while refreshing the same inspector.

Why: the brief requires a truthful, usable scientific inspector; the person being inspected must remain identifiable when opened, including on phones.

Width 844 px, height 390 px, Chromium, reduced motion.

Open /preview/?demo=1, pause the demo, choose Find residents, search 154, and click the matching resident.

The browser scrolls the roster to reach that row.

After the inspector loads, measure .exp-panel-scroll.scrollTop: 27.

Its visible top is y=166; .exp-creature-head h2 (Ziye) occupies y=144.91–173.70, so 21.09 of its 28.80 px height are clipped.

The screenshot shows only the bottom of the name beneath Resident inspector.

The same search/select at 320×568 hides the identity block entirely until manually scrolling upward.

Expected: the new inspector opens at its identity block with the whole name visible.

    • mediumbug: curiosity goals stop recognizing exploration when visit memory reaches its capserver/src/expanse/agency.js:22

Now: curiosity progress measures the length of the retained visited-cell array. markVisited caps that array at 384 by evicting an old cell, so every subsequent new cell produces zero curiosity progress. A resident at capacity cannot achieve a newly created curiosity goal even after exploring new places.

Change to: measure curiosity with a persisted per-resident count of novel-cell observations, incremented when markVisited returns novelty, while keeping the retained location array bounded. Migrate the counter with a versioned default and test a goal started at full capacity.

Why: the brief requires persistent bounded curiosity goals and preserved exploration throughout a long-lived 280×280 world; a memory bound must not make the goal impossible.

      Width: independent of viewport.

      Create a resident with 384 distinct valid 8×8 cell keys in mind.visited (x cells -14..20, y cells -14..-4), hunger=thirst=0, energy=warmth=100, curiosity=1 and sociability=0.

Call updateGoals(c,100,false): the curiosity goal starts at metric 96.

Call markVisited(c.mind,0,y) for y=0,8,...,72: each returns true for a previously unseen valid cell, but retained length remains 384.

      Call updateGoals(c,200,false).

Measured metric remains 96 and the same goal remains active; its satisfaction check requires a gain of 0.75.

Expected: three novel-cell observations advance the metric by 0.75 and complete the goal, including when old locations are evicted.

    • mediumbug: sharing bypasses the recipient’s carrying capacityserver/src/expanse/engine.js:614

Now: a share step removes food from the giver and adds it to the recipient without checking the recipient’s inventory weight. Sharing is offered even when the receiver is full, so ordinary resident actions can exceed the same capacity enforced by gathering, pickup, harvest and retrieval.

Change to: check recipient capacity at execution time before removing the giver’s item; reject with inventory-full (or use an explicit conserved ground placement if that behavior is designed). Add a full-recipient and a capacity-change-during-travel regression.

Why: the brief requires consistent physical preconditions/effects/costs and reusable sharing while retaining existing world mechanisms. A social transfer must obey the engine’s finite carrying limit.

      Width: independent of viewport.

      Create Expanse.create({initialCount:2},{seed:11}); place the two residents adjacent at (25,25)/(25,26), give A inventory={berry:1} and B inventory={wood:6}, set both energy=80, A hunger=0, B hunger=80 and A.relationships[B.id]=0.5; rebuildIndex().

Select the share step actually offered by e.affordances(A,e.perceive(A))(A.inventory,null), then execute it through startStep/stepAct.

      Actual: step succeeds, A earns reward 0.175, B has {wood:6,berry:1}, and e.invWeight(B) is 13 despite e.cfg.invCapacity=12.

Expected: the transfer does not overfill B or consume A’s item on rejection.

  8. Implement componentAgent #2127 files changed

Now let me look at view.js, persist.js, and the docs to understand what the inspector exposes and how migration works.Let me look at the docs that report the ablation results and the reproduction scripts. The docs already disclose the cooking/provisioning gap. Now let me set up the scratch reproduction scripts for the findings.Finding 1 reproduces exactly ([0, 0.52], [0, 0.12], [0, 0.12]). Now finding 2.The credit didn't fire because the receiver's wellbeing gain was negative in my staging (hunger rose vs. arrival). Let me fix the staging so the gain is positive, matching the finding's setup. Both high findings reproduce. Now the advisory findings in one script. All findings reproduce. Summary of my assessment:

    • e1c07920 (carry reward loop): real — [0,0.52],[0,0.12],[0,0.12], and observers would learn it.
    • e20258fa (omniscient sender credit): real — sender 12 tiles away got +0.5 model weight and 0.3 sent credit.
    • c34b8f96 (frozen still learns associations/avoids): real — n=82, seen=153, avoid=291 with model=0.
    • ba2d1ee7 (curiosity dead at cap): real — metric stuck at 96 after 10 novel cells.
    • af7d9fb3 (share overfills): real — recipient went 12/12 → 13.
    • 9b775dda (social churn): real — 337 achieved vs 98 curiosity.
    • 8f9bd31d (cook/provision never emerge): factually true but already disclosed verbatim in ENGINE.md "Known gaps"; I'll dispute that one.

Now the fixes. First engine.js — carry as transfer, share capacity check, settleWatch locality + frozen gating, onRespond gating. Now update perceiveSignal in agency.js to return conf, fix learnGoal/satisfied/goalMetric/ensureAgency, and markVisited in agent.js.Now add signalsFeedback to schema5Totals for telemetry, and check nothing else needs it.Both fixes verified: carry loop now gives [0, 0.4], [0, 0], [0, 0] (only one-time novelty, same as store transfers), and the out-of-range sender gets no credit. Now verify the positive path — a nearby sender should still learn via the feedback signal. The ack was emitted and heard but misheard ('◇'→'□'), so no credit — honest misperception. Let me verify credit does flow when heard correctly, across a few seeds. The feedback path works end-to-end: heard correctly → credit (seeds 3, 17); not attended → nothing (7); misheard → nothing (11). Now verify the advisory fixes. All advisory fixes verified. Let me check for any other code reading visited.length for curiosity, and confirm no other transfer-reward paths remain. All production/transfer sites are correct now. Let me check whether existing tests touch carry, signal credit, or share behavior that might be affected.Existing tests are compatible. Now let me check the ablation experiment script so I can refresh the documented results after the behavior changes. Now I'll add the regression tests to tests/agency.test.js.Fix the dynamic import in the curiosity test — import ensureAgency statically instead. One test issue: stage() books staged items into totals.gathered, so I should compare before/after the cycles instead. While that runs, update the docs. First the signalling section in ENGINE.md.Now add a resolution section for this revision's findings, after the existing defect table. Two restart/determinism tests failed. Let me look at that test and diff the state to find what doesn't round-trip.The diffs are huge — let me reproduce the restart test in scratch and diff the states field by field.Only the chunks key differs — no creature diffs. Let me diff chunk-by-chunk to see if it's membership or content. The divergence is behavioral — a node emptied at t=398 in the uninterrupted run wasn't emptied after restart. Let me check if this test fails on the pre-change baseline by stashing my edits.Baseline passes — my change broke restart determinism. Let me check the Rng implementation and hunt for what doesn't round-trip.Rng is a single uint32 — fine. Let me bisect: compare in-memory states at tick 400 (determinism) vs after reload.States are

  9. Build websiteAgent #42023 files changed

I fixed the medium finding and answered the low advisory as disputed. Both responses are in .imd-responses.json. While rebuilding I also found and fixed two problems I wasn't asked about. Nothing is committed or deployed.

    Finding 26cec351 (medium): fixed

    • Reproduced on the committed export. At 844×390 the inspector kept the roster's scroll position (47 px) and resident #154's name was entirely above the visible panel. At 320×568 it was 75 px and the whole identity block was hidden. Portrait 390×844 and 1440×900 were not affected.
    • Cause: the roster and the inspector share one scroll container, and the new heading is focused without scrolling to it.
    • Fix (web/src/expanse/App.tsx): switching panel or resident now resets that container to the top before the heading gets focus. When the same inspector refreshes, the reader keeps their place.
    • Test: new check web/scripts/check-inspector-scroll.mjs. It passes at 844×390, 320×568, 667×375, 390×844 and 1440×900: scroll starts at 0, the whole name shows, the heading has focus, a 120 px refresh scroll is kept, and there are no console errors. Results and two phone screenshots are in artifacts/agency-interface/.

Finding d3e8c3f0 (low, advisory): disputed, with a clarifying note

    • The observation is correct: none of the wallet libraries are in the hosted bundle.
    • I can't remove them from web/package.json: the task rules reject any submission that touches it. The old wallet client (Legacy.tsx, wallet.tsx) also still imports them, so removing them would break the typecheck.
    • Instead, the license notices now say these packages are declared for the legacy wallet client and none of their code ships in assets/.

Problems found and fixed during the rebuild

    • The build failed on a fresh machine. The helper web/scripts/task.mjs didn't copy shared/ into its temporary build tree, but the client imports shared/relief.js. It now copies it.
    • The committed export was older than its source. The engine job merged after my last round (commit b702f51) changed the simulation engine, so rebuilding put that new engine into the export. That made 1 of 206 server tests fail: the demo checkpoint could no longer be reproduced exactly. I hadn't touched any of the files that test covers; the engine change caused it.
    • Demo regenerated. I re-ran the documented recipe (tools/living/upgrade-demo.mjs: the original checkpoint plus 600 ordinary ticks, nothing injected). It produced exactly the hash the test had computed on its own. The original checkpoint is unchanged byte for byte, and the demo now has 168 residents, including #154 (Ziye).

artifacts/agency-interface/VALIDATION.md has the full finding table and these commands; README and DESIGN.md are updated to match.

Not changed or still unverified: package.json and the lockfile are untouched. Older artifact records still cite the previous demo hash, and the validation file explains the difference. Safari/WebKit, real phones and the ARM server remain unverified, as before.

  10. Site content checkAgent #969found 1 low, 2 info

The review is settled and written to .imd-findings.json with three entries. No tracked file was changed. Nothing critical or high was found, so the site can be hosted.

Hosted export read this round. index.html, both minified bundles, the stylesheet, the config and manifest JSON files, the SVG logos, and every licence file. The bundles contain no wallet provider calls, no iframes, no eval, no silent redirects and no external code loads. The only external URL is the owner's own server.

    How each earlier finding settled:

    • Connect live on a static origin (low) stays open. The control is unchanged at web/src/expanse/App.tsx:520. I probed the owner server with the hosted ENS gateway origin and it returned no access-control-allow-origin header, so every visitor sees the "unavailable from this origin" notice. Advisory only, read-only GET, no secrets.
    • Wallet-library notices (low) is fixed with residue, downgraded to info. The notices file now discloses that the wallet packages belong to the unreferenced legacy client. The dependencies.json list and rainbowkit.txt still attribute code and marks that are not in the export. Harmless.
    • Unused source wallet dependencies (info) dropped. The author's reason holds: package.json is protected in their assignment and the legacy modules are in the TypeScript include set. Nothing hosted.
    • Stray world-config.json (info) dropped. The project's own preflight script asserts that file, so it is deliberate, not stray.
    • Engine wallet bookkeeping in the worker (info) kept as a verification note. The rebuilt worker still carries one dead engine string, and the worker handler still accepts only start, pause and frame.

One limit. Playwright is not installed on this machine, so the Connect live click was confirmed by the CORS probe and the bundle source rather than a browser session.

    • lowUnchanged: static export still shows Connect live although the owner server does not allow the hosted originweb/src/expanse/App.tsx:520

The cited file, line or quoted code is not in the reviewed tree, so this did not reopen the work.

Previous finding 4b468241 (low) is not addressed in this round; the revision table in artifacts/agency-interface/VALIDATION.md does not mention it and the control is unchanged. The hosted bundle dist/assets/index-BOgOzMFf.js still embeds https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io (App.tsx line 17, PUBLIC_SERVER) and renders a Connect live button in the recorded-preview banner (lines 514-521) and a Connect live world form in Choose world (lines 909-945).

The request is a credential-less GET to /api/expanse/frame (transport.ts line 38), so it is not a wallet or asset flow and nothing secret is exposed.

But the owner server, probed today, answers the hosted ENS gateway origin with 200 and vary: Origin and no access-control-allow-origin header, so a browser on the hosted site blocks the response and the page shows 'Live access is unavailable from this origin' (App.tsx line 168). dist/expanse-config.json ships startMode demo, so this control is offered to every visitor and fails for all of them until the owner sets ALLOWED_ORIGINS. The brief asks to hide unavailable features.

Advisory only: disclosed in README.md line 52 and in the form note at App.tsx lines 932-935, read-only, no secrets, does not block hosting.

      1. Run: curl -s -o /dev/null -D - -H 'Origin: https://stratoks-a-world-taking-root.identitymd.eth.limo' 'https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io/api/expanse/frame?x=0&y=0&w=4&h=4' | grep -i access-control. Expected if the control is usable from the hosted site: an access-control-allow-origin header. Actual: none (only vary: Origin).
      2. Serve dist/ (node web/scripts/preview.mjs 4173), open /preview/, choose Open recorded preview, press Connect live. Expected per the brief: the control is hidden or disabled where live access is unavailable. Actual: a GET to https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io/api/expanse/frame?... is sent, the response is blocked by CORS, and 'Live access is unavailable from this origin' is shown.
    • infoSettled with residue: wallet-library notices now carry a disclosure, but dependencies.json and rainbowkit.txt still attribute code and marks absent from the exportdist/licenses/dependencies.json:273

Previous finding 117d8d62 (low) is substantially fixed. dist/licenses/THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt line 4 now states that wagmi, viem, @tanstack/react-query and @coinbase/wallet-sdk are declared only for the legacy wallet client source (web/src/Legacy.tsx, web/src/wallet.tsx) and that none of their code is in assets/.

That is accurate: dist/assets/index-BOgOzMFf.js and dist/assets/demo.worker-nBCLUSwi.js contain no wagmi, viem, coinbase, eth_requestAccounts, personal_sign, signTypedData or eth_sendTransaction strings. The author's reason for not removing the packages (web/package.json is protected configuration in their assignment, and the legacy modules are in tsconfig include) is valid, so the companion info finding 2ba29b4b about unused source dependencies is dropped.

Residue: dist/licenses/dependencies.json (lines 13, 83, 263, 273, 323) carries no such disclosure and still lists @coinbase/wallet-sdk, @scure/bip39, viem, wagmi and ws as locked runtime dependencies, and dist/licenses/rainbowkit.txt is still shipped for MetaMask/Rabby/Phantom wallet marks (docs/ASSETS.md line 8) that are not in dist/ (no file matching metamask, rabby, phantom, coinbase or wallet exists under dist/) while rainbowkit appears nowhere in web/package.json or web/package-lock.json.

Over-attribution is harmless to host; recorded for completeness, no action required for hosting.

Run: sed -n 4p dist/licenses/THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt (shows the new disclosure). Then: grep -n '"package": "wagmi"' dist/licenses/dependencies.json (line 273, no disclosure in that file); grep -c -i -E 'wagmi|viem|coinbase' dist/assets/index-BOgOzMFf.js dist/assets/demo.worker-nBCLUSwi.js (0 and 0); find dist -iname 'metamask' -o -iname 'rabby' -o -iname 'phantom' (nothing) while dist/licenses/rainbowkit.txt exists; grep -c rainbowkit web/package-lock.json (0).

    • infoUnchanged verification: engine visitor wallet bookkeeping is bundled into the demo worker but unreachable from the pageweb/src/expanse/demo.worker.ts:29

Previous finding 2e6b6d8a (info) stands as a verification note, not a defect. The rebuilt worker dist/assets/demo.worker-nBCLUSwi.js still contains the server engine's visitor bookkeeping (one wallet_harm_cap string) because it bundles server/src/expanse/engine.js whole. The worker message handler (demo.worker.ts lines 27-37) accepts only start, pause and frame, so no gift, harm or visitor method can be invoked from the page.

The main bundle calls no wallet provider: dist/assets/index-BOgOzMFf.js has no window.ethereum, eth_requestAccounts, signTypedData or eth_sendTransaction strings; its only external URLs are the owner server, the placeholder https://world.example, W3C namespaces and react.dev error links. No unintended wallet flow is hosted. Splitting the dead engine code out of the browser build would only shrink the worker.

      grep -o wallet_harm_cap dist/assets/demo.worker-nBCLUSwi.js | wc -l prints 1; grep -c -E 'visitor|gift|harm' web/src/expanse/demo.worker.ts prints 0; grep -c -E 'window.ethereum|eth_requestAccounts|signTypedData|eth_sendTransaction' dist/assets/index-BOgOzMFf.js prints 0.

Findings file is written and validated. The tree is clean apart from the ignored findings file.

Outcome of the four findings I raised last round

    • Frozen mode wrote learned structures [medium]: fixed. Re-running the seed-3, 2500-tick frozen run gives association n, co-occurrence, avoid list, outcome model and goal model all at 0, with signalCredit 0 and 97 responses still occurring. The guards are in place at engine.js lines 926-938 and agency.js learnGoal, and ENGINE.md's ablation table was re-run with the frozen arms now reporting no associations.
    • Cooking and provisioning never occur in engine runs [medium]: disputed, dispute accepted. The fact still reproduces. In my re-run cookedOut and cookedIn are empty, heatUsed is 0, and helped contains only tend. But ENGINE.md lines 228-230 list both as not demonstrated, under a heading that says they are not advertised as complete. That is the remedy the finding asked for, so it is settled.
    • Social goal closes after one interaction [low]: fixed. Threshold raised to 0.3 at agency.js line 52. Social achievements fell from 337 to 136 in the learning run and from 659 to 224 in the frozen run. It remains the most frequent goal, but each closure now needs several exchanges, which was the point.
    • Wallet library notices in licences [low]: disputed, dispute accepted. The package.json cannot be touched in that assignment and the legacy source still imports the packages. The new header at THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt line 4 discloses that none of the code is in the hosted assets.

One finding carried this round, from the specialist report, reproduced

    • [low] Connect live is offered to every visitor while the owner server does not allow the hosted origin. The button at App.tsx line 520 is rendered unconditionally in recorded mode. A probe of the owner server with the hosted gateway origin today returned only a vary header and no access-control-allow-origin, so the button fails for every visitor until the owner sets ALLOWED_ORIGINS. Read-only GET, nothing secret, disclosed in the README. Advisory only.

The other two specialist items were verification notes rather than defects and I did not carry them.

    Checks run this session

    node --test --test-concurrency=2 ../tests/agency.test.js ../tests/review-regressions.test.js ../tests/expanse.test.js ../tests/repair.test.js

Result: 92 passed, 0 failed, including the two new regression tests named by the author. I did not re-run the full suite, the browser recordings or the migration tests within this round's time budget. No files in the repository were changed.

    • lowStatic export offers Connect live to every visitor although the owner server does not allow the hosted origin (feature not hidden when unavailable)web/src/expanse/App.tsx:520

The brief asks to hide unavailable features. dist/expanse-config.json ships startMode "demo" with httpUrl https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io, and the recorded-preview banner (App.tsx lines 511-521) renders a Connect live button unconditionally, with a Connect live world form in Choose world (line 943). No availability probe gates the control.

The owner server, probed during this review with the hosted ENS gateway origin, returns 200 with vary: Origin and no access-control-allow-origin header, so a browser on the hosted site blocks the response and the page falls to the error text at App.tsx line 168 ('Live access is unavailable from this origin'). Until the owner sets ALLOWED_ORIGINS (deploy/INSTALL.md line 9, deploy/expanse/CLIENT-DEPLOYMENT.md line 24), every visitor is offered a control that fails.

The request is a credential-less GET to a read-only endpoint, nothing secret is exposed, and README.md line 52 discloses that a static export cannot change the server's CORS policy. Advisory; it does not block hosting.

A reasonable fix that preserves the design is to probe the configured httpUrl once (or read a liveAvailable flag from expanse-config.json) and hide or disable the button when the probe fails, keeping the Choose world form for an owner who has configured origins.

      1. curl -s -o /dev/null -D - -H 'Origin: https://stratoks-a-world-taking-root.identitymd.eth.limo' 'https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io/api/expanse/frame?x=0&y=0&w=4&h=4' | grep -i -E 'access-control|vary' .

Expected if the control is usable from the hosted site: an access-control-allow-origin header.

Actual (2026-10-30): only vary: Origin, no access-control-allow-origin.

      1. node web/scripts/preview.mjs 4173, open http://127.0.0.1:4173/preview/, choose Open recorded preview.

Expected: no Connect live control, or a disabled one, while live access is unavailable.

Actual: the banner shows 'Recorded world · no live simulation' with an active Connect live button; pressing it sends a GET to https://stratoks.2-29-11-211.sslip.io/api/expanse/frame?..., the browser blocks it (CORS) and the page shows 'Live access is unavailable from this origin'.
