Finish and ship Among Squeeks, a free multiplayer social deduction game for Squeekchain, as a hosted static website.

Squeekchain is a proof-of-work toy chain powered by a real hamster, Squeektoshi, running on a sensor-equipped wheel. In Among Squeeks a crew of hamsters mines a block while a secret Rugger tries to drain the vault. Every shift runs on what the real wheel did: when he really pauses, the power cuts out, tasks stop, miners can barely see, and a red lever looks green in the dark. A wheel log at each meeting shows when the power cut out and when consoles were tampered with.

START FROM THE EXISTING PROJECT

Use https://github.com/haileymarshall/among-squeeks at commit 0ed5afdd9dca644c275fd8f21ac522caf2da25a0 as the starting code, and keep its stack: Vite, React, Phaser, Tailwind and the Colyseus client. Read README.md first.

  • web/ is the game page. pnpm install && pnpm build in web/ writes the static site to web/dist with relative paths. web/.env.production holds the game server address.
  • server/ is the game server. It is already deployed at https://among-squeeks-server.onrender.com and you cannot redeploy it. Host the static build of web/ as the site, and publish the full source, including server/, to GitHub.

WHAT TO BUILD, ALL IN web/

  1. Play now. Add the main button on the title screen: one tap puts a first-time visitor into a running shift against 5 AI hamsters with no setup. Use the existing client messages: create a private room, send addBot five times, then start. It must work on a phone. Keep Host private and Join by code for playing with friends.
  2. First-shift tutorial. On a first visit, show a short, skippable how-to-play with the hamster art: your role, tasks, the real wheel and power cuts, red levers, meetings and the wheel log. The first time the power cuts out in a shift, show one short hint that this is the real hamster stopping. Remember it in localStorage, wrapped in try/catch.
  3. Waking screen. The free game server can take up to 60 seconds to wake. While joining, show "Waking the burrow..." and keep retrying for up to 90 seconds instead of showing an error. After that, show a friendly message with a Retry button.
  4. Result card. On the end screen, draw a shareable image on a canvas with the player's hamster, role, who won, real wheel passes and the date of the real run. Add Download and Post on X. The post text must include the site address, using the current page address.
  5. Sound and phone polish. Add a mute button that is remembered. Touch targets must be at least 44px. No sideways scrolling at 390px wide. The wheel log must be readable on a phone.

RULES

  • Change only files under web/ and README.md. Do not change server/ or web/src/shared/, because the live server depends on them. The client must stay compatible with the deployed server.
  • Entry stays free: no wallet, token, contract, login, payment or analytics. No secrets in the repository.
  • The wheel data must stay real. Never invent wheel numbers. Don't remove the Squeekchain API call on the title screen.
  • Use only original art drawn in code or already in the repository. No Among Us or Chog names or art.
  • Say on the site that this is an independent fan project, not affiliated with Squeekchain or Among Us.
  • Plain, friendly English.

ACCEPTANCE

  • pnpm build in web/ passes with no type errors, and node test/match.test.mjs https://among-squeeks-server.onrender.com in server/ still passes.
  • From a fresh browser profile at 390px and at 1280px, Play now reaches a running shift, with no console errors and no sideways scrolling. If the game server can't be reached from your environment, say so in the README's testing notes and test against a local copy of server/.
  • The static build works from a subfolder and from the site root.
  • README.md explains what the game is, how it uses Squeekchain, how to play, how to run it and the hosted address.

  3. Design criticAgent #926found 1 medium

The build is close to ready. I found one medium accessibility issue, nothing high, and no broken features. It's recorded in .imd-findings.json, and no repository files were changed.

Requirements (the requester's words, verdict, and where to see it):

    • "Play now… one tap… 5 AI hamsters": met. Hud.tsx:52 sends addBot five times, then start. I ran it live at 390 from a /sub/ subfolder against the real server: the shift was running in 6s, with no console errors and a scroll width of 390.
    • "work on a phone": met. Same live run, with touch controls on screen.
    • "Keep Host private and Join by code": met. MenuOffice.tsx:59.
    • "First-shift tutorial… skippable… hamster art" covering role, tasks, wheel and power cuts, red levers, meetings and wheel log: met. Tutorial.tsx:4-10, with five steps and a Skip button.
    • "first time the power cuts out… one short hint": met. Hud.tsx:65,344.
    • "Remember it in localStorage, wrapped in try/catch": met. lib/preferences.ts.
    • "Waking the burrow...", retry for up to 90 seconds, then a friendly message with Retry: met. connect.ts:4,36 and MenuOffice.tsx:84-85.
    • Result card canvas showing hamster, role, winner, wheel passes and run date: met. resultCard.ts; the date comes from the server's run label or the status API, never the player's clock.
    • "Download" and "Post on X" with the current page address: met. MatchEnd.tsx:43-44 and currentSiteAddress().
    • "mute button that is remembered": met. SoundButton.tsx. Its accessible name is the one finding below.
    • "Touch targets at least 44px": met. The probe found 0 controls under 44px on the title screen, and my in-game measurement found 0.
    • "No sideways scrolling at 390": met. Probe at 320, 390 and 1440, plus the live game.
    • "wheel log must be readable on a phone": met. WheelLog.tsx, with a text list, a legend and a "Show all" button.
    • Keep Vite, React, Phaser, Tailwind and Colyseus, and change nothing in server/ or shared/: met. The last commit only adds files.
    • Free entry, no wallet, login or analytics: met. The only outside hosts are api.squeekchain.com and the game server.
    • Real wheel data, keeping the status API call: met. MenuOffice.tsx:33 and Hud.tsx:78; a failed reading is shown as "unavailable".
    • Original art only: met. The repository's hamster SVGs and art drawn in code.
    • Fan-project disclaimer: met. MenuOffice.tsx:70 (footer).
    • Plain, friendly English: met.
    • Works from a subfolder and the site root: met. base is ./, and I tested /sub/ live.
    • README covers the game, Squeekchain, how to play, how to run it and the hosted address: met. The site address itself is left for after review.
    • The build and the server's match test pass: met as reported in the README. I didn't rerun them; the live Play now run confirms the client still works with the deployed server.
    • Hosting the site and publishing to GitHub: after review.

The idea in one sentence: a warm, dark burrow where a real hamster's wheel is the power supply, carried by one image of a wheel and a crew where "One of these hamsters has other plans."

    Finding

    1. Medium, accessibility: the sound button's accessible name contradicts its visible label (web/src/components/SoundButton.tsx:7).
      • Now: the screen shows "Sound on", but screen readers hear "Mute sound". When muted they hear "Unmute sound, pressed" while the screen says "Sound off".
      • Change to: aria-label="Sound" aria-pressed={!muted}, remove title, and make the label text "Sound".
      • Why: WCAG 2.5.3 Label

    • mediumaccessibility: the sound button's accessible name contradicts its visible label ("Sound on" is announced as "Mute sound")web/src/components/SoundButton.tsx:7

Now: the mute button shows the text "Sound on" / "Sound off" (visible at 1280+ in the title header, on the result screen and in meetings above 42rem), but aria-label overrides it with "Mute sound" / "Unmute sound" and also sets aria-pressed, so a screen reader reads "Unmute sound, toggle button, pressed" while the screen says "Sound off". A voice-control user who says "click Sound on" matches nothing.

Change to: give the button one stable name that matches what is shown and let aria-pressed carry the state: replace aria-label={muted ? "Unmute sound" : "Mute sound"} aria-pressed={muted} with aria-label="Sound" aria-pressed={!muted}, delete the title prop, and change the span text to Sound (keeping the sound/muted icon swap as the visual state).

Why: WCAG 2.5.3 Label in Name (Level A) requires the accessible name to contain the visible label; a toggle whose name flips and is also aria-pressed announces a double negative. The brief asks for "a mute button that is remembered" on a site that must work for every visitor.

      Width 1440 (or 1280).

Steps: open dist/index.html over HTTP in a fresh Chromium profile; look at the header utilities.

Evidence: the screenshot test/scratch/taste/shots/1440.png shows the visible label "Sound on" at the top right; the DOM for the same element is …Sound on (SoundButton.tsx:7-8), so its computed accessible name is "Mute sound", which does not contain "Sound on".

Click it: visible text becomes "Sound off", accessible name becomes "Unmute sound" with aria-pressed="true".

Expected: the accessible name contains the visible words and only aria-pressed changes.
