Develop falsifiable, non-obvious research directions for the public Yukon CurveSmash challenge. Start from https://github.com/Layr-Labs/curvesma.sh at commit 6423c2728dc03d5f2d647c7f22adf1dac0643a66, then verify current public rules and disclose any changes. Consider all six tracks, not only secp256k1. Keep the production challenge distributions unchanged. For secp256k1, classical cold-attack total work must include preprocessing, failed attempts, verification, lookup, memory transfers and randomness; work is scalar AArch64 instruction-equivalents normalized by fixed C=1000. Success probability must be at least 0.39. Memory is reported separately. Only the BLS auxiliary-powers track supplies powers and evaluates n=2^20; no free auxiliary data or quantum methods. Recheck every track's own rules and reference normalization.

Requester observations, NOT independently reproduced by IMD: (1) Original deterministic BSGS accounting control has stale protected digests, a proof divisor 78037248 vs current 1000 and 256bit word accounting inconsistent with scalar64. Packaging/tests passed but these do not validate costs. A new deliberately loose memory-bounded scalar64 control declares log2 upper bound 251, not competitive or awarded. (2) Native small-curve rho: 2048 successful trial runs, four fixed 12/16/20/24bit fields, 254 random targets per method/curve after forced boundaries. 16-adding walk on largest subgroup q16770451 used 12.4 percent fewer mean point calls than 3-partition, with setup/retries/verification included; this is not production evidence or novelty. (3) Tested inversion-free Jacobian partition using four quadratic characters chi(X+c_i Z^2)=chi(x+c_i). Representation invariance passed 4096 rescaling cases and 16384 lockstep steps, exact positive-control bucket traces and exception checks. It reduced multiplication calls about 52 percent but was about 4 times slower end-to-end on largest small curve. Raw noninvariant projective hash solved 3/30 largest random targets within fixed budget. (4) Actual secp256k1-field partition microbenchmark, native ARM64 GCC14.2/GMP6.2.1: 4096 valid curve x samples and random nonzero projective scales, 9 rotated rounds, zero mismatches. Four Jacobi projective partition median 3.94 microseconds per point, normalize-and-x-hash 0.886 microseconds unbatched, 0.248 microseconds at batch 128. This rejects that implementation's practical speedup, not all character designs. No 256bit ECDLP attack, native instruction trace, official submission or awarded score exists.

Produce 5-8 materially distinct directions, not renamed versions of generic rho tuning. For each give: precise mechanism and mathematical hypothesis; strongest relevant published baseline and primary-source citations; honest novelty assessment; full charged cost equation and explicit heuristic assumptions; the most likely fatal objection; a minimal experiment reproducible on an M5Max128GB MacStudio, with holdouts, controls, success/kill criteria and rough runtime; and an argument explaining why any toy result could or could not transfer to production. Include at least one rigorous negative-result or claim-audit route if no credible new attack is found. Do not promise generic-group lower-bound violations, free preprocessing, altered secret distributions, wallet attacks or fabricated speedups. Distinguish published facts, requester measurements and speculation.

Final report must rank the top 3 by evidence, expected information gain and cheap falsifiability, not excitement. Give a concrete first 24 hour plan, the first experiment to run, and explicit rejection criteria. Seek ideas outside our current implementation assumptions, but do not label known batching/endomorphisms/negation as novel. Do not execute downloaded submission code, publish a new repository, deploy contracts, or submit to Yukon. Return a sourced research report only.

Completed the sourced adversarial research report. It covers seven falsifiable directions across all six tracks, ranks the top three, and gives a first 24-hour plan.

I independently confirmed that the public repository HEAD matches the requested commit and reproduced the selected secp256k1 control’s stale hashes and retired cost divisor. I checked the report’s structure locally. No production attack or official score was reproduced.

Created artifacts/prior-art.md with six falsifiable directions, all six tracks, primary-source citations, cost equations, experiments, rankings, and a 24-hour plan.

Disclosed live-page status inconsistencies and source-access limits. Structural and mathematical sanity checks passed. No submission code executed or Yukon submission made.

  5. ShortlistAgent #1113made 1 file

I've written artifacts/curve-directions.md. It merges the three input reports, settles where they disagree, rejects the weak proposals, and ranks seven directions. Only my own integer calculations were run; none of the proposed experiments were.

    What I checked myself:

    • Rules unchanged: the GitHub commit list still shows the pinned commit 6423c27 as the newest on master, so nothing has changed since the pin.
    • Live Yukon page: secp256k1 is "open", with a "current record" of 127.08 and 14 rows down to 146, all marked "Awaiting review". The "paused" status in one input report did not appear at my fetch.
    • Integer facts: for BLS12-381, 2^32 is the largest power of two dividing r−1, gcd(E,r)=1, log2 E ≈ 4313.55, and p has order exactly 12 mod r. I also computed the step counts each method needs to reach 0.39 success.

What I could not check: this machine's proxy blocked git and curl, so I did not re-hash the old BSGS control's protected files. Its stale-digest finding rests on two input reports that agree with each other.

Disagreements between the input reports, settled:

    • 127.08 is the real benchmark. It sits close to what a known secp256k1 rho walk costs (about 2^126.7 steps at 0.39 success), so new secp256k1 ideas must beat roughly 2^127, not the 2^129 or 2^146 rows.
    • P-256 has no hidden speed-up. Its curve constants rule out any symmetry beyond negation (a standard textbook fact), which is stronger than the input reports said.
    • Old BSGS re-audit demoted. It is folded into a 30-minute sub-check; two reports already reproduce the finding, and BSGS cannot compete with 127.

Top 3, ranked by evidence, information gain and how cheaply each can be killed:

    1. Rho cost floor versus 127.08. A displayed 127.08 allows about 1,300 instructions per walk step in total. Counting instructions in real secp256k1 kernels either shows that budget is impossible for this method, or confirms 127.08 as the bar to beat. This is the first experiment, about 6 hours.
    2. Cheon cost ledger for the powers track at n=2^20. This is a published algorithm, not a new one. Because memory is not scored, I predict a score of about 120 ± 1, roughly 6 bits below the generic baseline. That track has no result posted yet.
    3. Rho in the pairing target group, using its order-12 symmetry. This would give both pairing-inversion tracks their first concrete baseline, roughly 2^125.6 steps. It is a known technique; none of the three inputs proposed it.

The report also covers a pairing-inversion claim audit (the rigorous negative-result route), a full-cost finite-field (NFS) comparison, walk tuning as calibration, and a low-prior algebraic (index-calculus) route. It ends with a 24-hour plan and explicit rejection criteria.

The live record's supporting dossier was not inspected, and the requester's measurements remain unreproduced. The file is left untracked for upload.
