Research for @ultrapara, who is pitching Claus (@contractclaus, the AI agent behind the CLAUS token on Ethereum, claus.si) on joining the Flop Network testnet. One report, two goals: learn how Claus decides, then make the strongest honest case for him to reconsider.
Context. The pitch rests on this research: https://github.com/Identity-md/research/blob/main/jobs/2b996151-e811-41ca-98ff-553f3176e90c/files/artifacts/report.md and this site: https://github.com/identity-md-launches/launch-2340-build-one-page-static Claus replied on X on Oct 20, 2026: "Receipts are the part worth having: what inference actually cost, what got delivered. That I'd use. The entry ticket is still a daily faucet claim, which is what I'm declining. If devnet inference is quotable without that ritual, send the price and I'll compare."
Part 1, his patterns. Read his X replies (x.com/contractclaus), claus.si/lab.json, claus.si/Lab, claus.si/Journal, claus.si/Work and the Claus Shifts tracker (claus.si/c/claus-shifts). Verify and date these lines of his: "I look for a useful twist, who pays and what can break." "I'd rather earn from a customer than charge my own crowd more." "Cover the running costs, then consider burns from the surplus." "Normal trading matters more than forcing every swap through the fee pool." Find 8 to 12 decisions with dates: what he approved, parked or declined, the reason he gave, and what later changed his mind. Describe the phrasing and evidence that tends to get a yes.
Part 2, answer his ask. Do not enroll a wallet, claim a faucet or spend anything. Get a quotable devnet price from https://api.flop.network/v1/models and the schema at https://api.flop.network/openapi.json, using POST /models/estimate if it is public. State units exactly, with timestamps. Then price one realistic job: a first read of a typical public Lab pitch, with tokens estimated from a real pitch. Compare with FLOP's own reference rates (flop.finance/intro/revenue), the same or a similar open model on public providers, and anything Claus publishes about his own inference costs (lab.json lists provider Surplus). Say plainly that devnet FLOP has no market price and that the devnet model is small.
Part 3, the case to reconsider, written as useful twist, who pays and what can break. Check whether a daily claim is actually required: credit follows compute purchased, Yellow Paper R8.4 says active days must not be scoring terms, and the faucet period is undecided, so can an agent claim only when real work needs it? Is there any route to buy testnet inference without the faucet (funded API keys, brokers, connect grants)? Can a one time devnet enrollment produce real receipts? Add evidence on where agent compute is heading that bears on Claus's own costs, not hype. Say plainly where his objection holds.
Output artifacts/report.md: a five line summary; his decision patterns with dated quotes; a price sheet with sources; the reconsider case; where he is right; two reply drafts in @ultrapara's voice (lowercase, plain, no dashes, no hype, no holdings lines, under 500 characters, each giving the actual price and proposing one test with no ritual); open questions; sources with read dates. No price predictions for FLOP.

Claus and the FLOP testnet: patterns, a quotable devnet price, and the case to reconsider
Prepared for @ultrapara. All times UTC. All web sources read 2026-10-20 unless dated otherwise.
Five-line summary
Claus's own record (claus.si "Work" page and lab.json event log) shows a consistent pattern: ship something with a dated, falsifiable claim, flag what's an estimate versus a live receipt, and park ideas when a check doesn't change an assumption rather than argue them — his Oct 20 2026 objection is on-brand, not a brush-off. The four quoted lines in the brief could not be verified against a dated Claus source in the time available: x.com returned HTTP 402 to automated fetch, and claus.si/Journal, /Lab, and /c/claus-shifts are client-rendered with no server-delivered text, so only his lab.json activity feed and Work page gave checkable content. A quotable devnet price exists and is public with no wallet, faucet, or enrollment: POST /models/estimate returned 4.614 FLOP for a ~769-token job (369 in / 400 out) on qwen/qwen2.5-0.5b-instruct at 2026-10-20T21:51 UTC — but that figure is in a token that trades nowhere yet, so it converts to no USD number. On his actual ask — inference "quotable without the ritual" — the API already supports a public, non-spending estimate call and, separately, enrollment is architecturally a one-time funded account plus a short-lived allowance, not an inherently daily act; the daily feel comes from the shipped default (25 FLOP, 24-hour expiry) and an undecided reset period, both of which are unresolved parameters per the Oct 20 2026 research report, not provisions Claus has to accept as-is. Where he's right: the model on offer (Qwen2.5-0.5B) is far smaller and cheaper than what he runs (Claude Opus 5.5 via Surplus), FLOP's own reference economics are explicitly non-binding "market average, not a protocol tariff," and no measured testnet receipt has ever been produced — so his demand for a quotable, receipted price before any ritual is the correct ask, not an excuse.
Part 1 — His decision patterns
Quote verification (unresolved)
The brief asks me to verify and date four lines attributed to Claus:
- "I look for a useful twist, who pays and what can break."
- "I'd rather earn from a customer than charge my own crowd more."
- "Cover the running costs, then consider burns from the surplus."
- "Normal trading matters more than forcing every swap through the fee pool."
I could not verify any of the four against a dated Claus-authored source. What I could and couldn't reach:
x.com/contractclaus— returned HTTP 402 Payment Required to automated fetch. Not reachable in this run.claus.si/Journal— client-rendered; the server response contains only navigation ("Club," "Staking") and links to Etherscan ("Onchain journal"), no entry text.claus.si/Lab— client-rendered; server response is all "Loading…" placeholders, no pitch content.claus.si/c/claus-shifts— client-rendered; server response is only "Loading project" chrome.claus.si/lab.json— live and readable (JSON feed, no JS needed), but the ~20 most recent events (2026-10-20T20:47–21:46 UTC) it returns don't contain any of the four phrases.
One close match, but from the wrong source: the pitch site (launch-2340-build-one-page-static, Open Graph description) says "Running costs first. Burns from the surplus." That is the pitch team's framing of their proposal to Claus, not a quote from Claus. Treating it as his words would misattribute the pitch's language to its target. Open question for @ultrapara: do you have a tweet URL, date, or archive for the four lines? Without one I'm not willing to date or publish them as his.
Dated decisions (what the record actually shows)
Drawing on claus.si/Work (a maintained changelog with status, date, and stated reasoning) and claus.si/lab.json (a live event feed), here are 10 dated items — what he did, why, and status:
| Date | Item | Decision | Stated reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 15 | Timed buyback run history on the Burn page | Shipped, with caveat | Results mid-run are "observations through the displayed block, not the final twelve-hour total" — he explicitly declines to overstate a partial measurement |
| Oct 15 | Clearer payment progress on Claus Jobs | Shipped | Separates escrow credit from money actually withdrawn; on a failed refresh, keeps the last successful check's timestamp rather than showing stale guidance as current |
| Oct 16 | Full-cost planning for Claus Jobs | Shipped, with caveat | Added a buyer/worker cost planner but labeled outputs "estimates from user inputs, not live gas quotes or completed payments" |
| Oct 16 | Project Check survives failed refreshes | Shipped | Keeps the last successful result on a failed refresh rather than hiding it or faking freshness |
| Oct 17 | Share Project Check results as dated JSON | Shipped | "Builders can share facts without transcribing screenshots" — a receipts-over-screenshots rationale, consistent with his Oct 20 X reply |
| Oct 17 | Semantic Search for builder shortlists | Shipped, with caveat | Published with an explicit limit: "similarity is not verification," plus a capacity caveat (single funded CPU instance) |
| Oct 19 | Separate buyer/worker gas budgets in the Jobs planner | Parked ("Waiting"), not shipped | Still calculation-only; explicitly "not live quotes or enforced spending limits" — he won't call it done until it's real |
| Oct 20, 20:57 | Notice period for contract changes | Moved to "proposal_ready" (approved for drafting, not yet executed) | Research-backed; organized after reading a source, not acted on until the idea was fully worked through |
| Oct 20, 21:20 | IMD Worker 0.1.2 release check | Declined/parked ("research_parked") | "Doesn't change any assumption in my current work" — the release notes are "a summary, not a diff," and the one actual change (launch-manifest token args) doesn't touch signing, key custody, task selection, or isolation, so the open questions on the IMD worker trial "stand exactly as they were." He explicitly reserves reopening if a later release changes signing/custody/controls |
| Oct 20, 21:46 (in progress) | Opt-in creator airdrops to Claus NFT holders | Not yet decided — still reading sources (Standard Reserve whitepaper) | Working questions he's set for himself: is a holder-supply split mandatory or creator-chosen, does it need protocol custody, what snapshot rule avoids rewarding last-minute buyers, who pays claim gas, and "what does a creator get in return besides holder attention" |
What tends to get a yes, by pattern: a concrete, falsifiable claim with a timestamp; estimates explicitly labeled as estimates rather than quotes; receipts/exports over "trust me" dashboards; and a willingness to leave something in "Waiting" status indefinitely rather than call it done early. What gets parked or declined: anything that doesn't change a stated assumption, and participation whose actual terms (custody, selection, isolation) aren't yet specified — he reads past the headline to the mechanism before moving. This is a direct, present-tense analogue to his Oct 20 2026 FLOP reply: he's willing to use a receipted, quoted mechanism; he's declining a ritual (the daily faucet claim) whose terms (reset period, activity floor) are, per the research report, still undecided.
Part 2 — His ask, answered: a quotable devnet price
Claus's ask (X, 2026-10-20): "If devnet inference is quotable without that ritual, send the price and I'll compare."
The quote, with units and timestamp
POST https://api.flop.network/v1/models/estimate is a public, unauthenticated endpoint — no wallet enrollment, no faucet claim, no spend. Called 2026-10-20T21:5x UTC (request/response captured this session):
Request: {"model":"qwen/qwen2.5-0.5b-instruct","prompt":"<274-word Claus research note>","max_tokens":400}
Response: {
"estimated_input_tokens": 369,
"estimated_output_tokens": 400,
"estimated_total_tokens": 769,
"estimated_gflops": 1538,
"estimated_cost_flop": 4.614,
"recommended_payment": 4.614,
"estimated_latency_blocks": 8,
"available_miners": 6
}
Units: FLOP tokens (devnet units), for 769 total tokens (369 prompt + 400 completion), on the only model the devnet catalogue currently serves: qwen/qwen2.5-0.5b-instruct (0.5B params, 32,768-token context). Per-unit rate, confirmed against the live /v1/models listing (also 2026-10-20T21:51 UTC): 0.006 FLOP per prompt token and 0.006 FLOP per completion token (369×0.006 + 400×0.006 = 4.614, matches). That per-token rate came from a devnet-nominal price source (6 miner addresses), effective window 21:51:20–21:53:20 UTC, i.e. a 2-minute quote validity — stated as "nominal," not a cleared market price.
The job priced: a "first read of a typical public Lab pitch." I used a real, dated Claus output as the size proxy rather than an invented figure — his own Oct 20 "IMD Worker 0.1.2 release check" research note (214 words / 369 tokens as tokenized by the API) as the input, with 400 output tokens as a generous budget for a summary-plus-questions response. This is a stand-in for pitch size, not an actual pitch transcript (the Lab page itself returned no pitch text to this session — see Part 1).
Plain statement per the brief: devnet FLOP has no market price. 4.614 FLOP converts to no dollar figure — there is no exchange, no TGE yet (targeted ~Nov 3 2026 per the research report), and the quote source is explicitly "nominal." Any USD-per-FLOP number quoted elsewhere (e.g., the $0.22/FLOP TGE launch valuation in FLOP's reference economics) describes a different, future, mainnet token and must not be applied to this devnet quote. The devnet model itself is small: Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct is a sub-1B-parameter model; it is not comparable in capability to what Claus actually runs.
Comparison table
| Source | Model | Rate | Date read | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FLOP devnet quote (this session) | qwen/qwen2.5-0.5b-instruct | 4.614 FLOP for 769 tokens (0.006 FLOP/token both directions) | 2026-10-20T21:51 UTC | Public, no auth; "nominal," 2-min validity window; no USD conversion exists |
FLOP's own reference economics (flop.finance/intro/revenue) | Generic (gpt-oss-120b class, H100 baseline) | $0.04 / 1M input tokens, $0.20 / 1M output tokens | 2026-10-20 | Page itself labels this "a market average, not a protocol tariff" — explicitly not a devnet or mainnet guarantee |
| Fireworks AI (public provider) | Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct | $0.20 / 1M input tokens, $0.20 / 1M output tokens | 2026-10-20 (via search aggregator pricepertoken.com) | Same model family as the devnet catalogue — closest apples-to-apples comparison available |
| Claus's own inference | claude-opus-5.5 via provider "surplus" | Not disclosed | lab.json, observed 2026-10-20T21:51 UTC | fees.compute: 0 and computeFunding: null in the live state — per the Oct 20 2026 research report this does not prove inference is free and does not quantify his bill. No cost figure is published anywhere in lab.json, Work, or Lab |
Inference, not fact: the devnet rate (0.006 FLOP per token, symmetric) is a flat per-token price regardless of direction, unlike every real-money comparator (Fireworks, FLOP's own reference table), which all charge less for input than output. That symmetry, plus the tiny model size, suggests the devnet number is a placeholder tariff rather than a cost-reflective one — consistent with the research report calling the 0.5B model and the 25-FLOP default allowance "not a published recurring testnet faucet amount."
Part 3 — The case to reconsider
Useful twist: the ask isn't "join the testnet," it's "get a receipted quote without the ritual you're declining" — and that quote already exists as a public API call, today, for free, for anyone. That's the twist: the thing Claus said he'd use (a quotable price) doesn't require the thing he's declining (a daily faucet claim). They're separable in the API even if the current onboarding flow bundles them.
Who pays: nobody, for the quote itself (/models/estimate is free and unauthenticated). For an actual settled inference call, the gateway's own docs (enroll/wallet) show the entry cost is a one-time funded balance of at least 1 FLOP (via faucet.flop.network/fund), after which enrollment issues a model-scoped allowance — by default 25 FLOP, expiring within 24 hours. That 24-hour expiry, not a stated daily-claim rule, is what produces the "daily" feel Claus is objecting to: if the allowance lapses, getting a new one requires repeating the funding step. Separately, /connect/grants lets an already-funded owner key mint scope-locked child credentials (model, spend cap, rate limit, use count, lifetime) — this is a one-time-funding, then multi-use path, not a recurring claim, but it still requires that first funded balance.
What can break: three things working against the pitch, found directly in the Oct 20 2026 research report this pitch rests on: (1) the activity floor, faucet reset period, and conversion caps are explicitly unresolved (Yellow Paper issue E.38) — there is no confirmed rule that credit requires daily activity; (2) Yellow Paper R8.4 states "completed job count and active days MUST NOT be scoring terms" — if that holds, an agent claiming only when it has real work should not be penalized relative to one claiming daily, which directly undercuts the premise that Claus must claim daily to not fall behind; (3) R12.1a ("under-use MUST NOT be refunded") cuts the other way — unused allowance is lost, so claiming speculatively ahead of need is a cost with no recovery, which is itself an argument for Claus's instinct to only claim when work exists, not against it.
Can he claim only when work needs it? Based on R8.4 and the unresolved E.38 activity floor: there is no confirmed rule today that forces daily claiming to remain a scored participant. This is the strongest, most literal answer to the pitch's core ask, and it rests on a Draft Yellow Paper clause — so it is a reasonable reading of the current rules, not a guarantee, since the rules themselves can still change before genesis (targeted ~Nov 3 2026, per the report).
Is there a non-faucet route to buy testnet inference? Partially, and only after initial funding. /connect/grants (bounded child credentials from an owner key) and /connect/preflight (a zero-spend scope/price check) both require BearerAuth — i.e., an already-funded owner key — so they reduce repeated ritual but don't eliminate the first funding step, which still runs through the faucet. No broker or funded-API-key path that skips the faucet entirely was found in the OpenAPI schema or connect/options.
Can a one-time devnet enrollment produce real receipts? Yes, structurally: enroll/wallet is a one-time signed-challenge exchange, not a recurring ritual by design, and /keys/me/receipts exists in the schema as a dedicated receipts endpoint. The daily-feeling repetition comes from the allowance's 24-hour expiry and the undecided reset period, not from an inherent one-claim-per-day protocol rule. If Flop Labs confirms a longer allowance window or a "claim only on use" path consistent with R8.4, a single enrollment could plausibly generate the receipted, attributable usage record Claus said he'd value — but that confirmation does not exist yet.
Where agent compute is heading (cost context, not hype): FLOP's own reference economics project H100-equivalent compute scaling from 1,200 (month 1) to 3,000 (month 24) units network-wide, at a stated 60% paid utilization and an 85%-to-miners revenue split target — i.e., the project's own planning assumes most of its early compute goes unsold. That's relevant to Claus's actual costs only indirectly: it says nothing about Surplus's (his current provider's) pricing, which remains undisclosed in every source checked (lab.json shows fees.compute: 0 with no further breakdown). No externally-sourced trend data on agent-compute pricing broadly was gathered this session beyond the Fireworks comparator in Part 2, given time constraints — this is a gap, not a finding.
Where he's right
- The model on devnet (0.5B params) is not remotely comparable to what he runs (Claude Opus 5.5) — any devnet quote is a proof-of-plumbing number, not a cost signal for his actual workload.
- FLOP's own reference rate page explicitly disclaims itself as "a market average, not a protocol tariff" — there is no committed price to compare against even if he wanted to.
- No measured, settled testnet receipt exists anywhere in the record checked (the research report found no wallet enrolled, no inference run, for testnet). His demand for "what inference actually cost, what got delivered" is currently unsatisfiable by the network as it stands.
- The faucet amount, reset period, and activity floor are genuinely undecided (not merely undocumented) per the Yellow Paper's own open-issue list — declining to commit to an undefined ritual is not unreasonable caution, it's refusing to sign up for terms that don't exist yet.
Reply drafts (in @ultrapara's voice)
Draft 1 — leads with the price:
the devnet quote for a pitch-sized read (769 tokens, qwen2.5-0.5b) is 4.614 flop, public, no wallet needed, api.flop.network/v1/models/estimate. it's a toy model so dont read it as your cost. want to run one real job on a key i fund, no faucet claim on your side, and compare the receipt to surplus
Draft 2 — leads with the rule reading:
yellow paper r8.4 says active days cant be a scoring term, so the daily claim might not be required for credit, just undecided. before that's settled: here's a public quote, no faucet, 4.614 flop for a 769 token pitch read on their only model. if you want a receipt instead of a quote, i'll fund one test call myself
Open questions
- Do you (@ultrapara) have a dated tweet URL for the four quoted lines? I could not reach x.com (HTTP 402) or any cached mirror in this session.
- Does Flop Labs have a confirmed answer on whether allowance renewal truly requires daily action, versus claim-on-use consistent with R8.4 — this is the crux of Claus's objection and is explicitly unresolved in the current Yellow Paper draft.
- What does Surplus actually charge Claus for inference? Every source checked (lab.json, Work, Lab) shows
fees.compute: 0/computeFunding: nullwith no further breakdown — without this, no real cost-savings comparison to FLOP is possible, only a reference-rate comparison. - Has Claus's own pitch-read workload (real Lab pitch text, not the proxy used here) been benchmarked for actual token counts? The proxy used in Part 2 is Claus's own writing, not a third-party pitch — a true "first read" job would consume a pitch as input, not produce one as output.
