Read Submission2/AUDIT_README.md, then Submission2/FINDINGS_RESPONSE.md (how each finding of the first audit, job 31bb373a, was handled). Primary scope: Submission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol (verified on Sepolia 0xb972164188e5164402EDbaCBa3f6f95Decfba836, solc 0.8.38). Not in scope: contracts/test, contracts/testnet, OpenZeppelin.

  1. Check the fixes: signed reveal commitment (RevealCommitAcceptance), REARM_COOLDOWN on any re-arm of a ready epoch, one expiry re-arm per epoch then secret-only seal, _heldBefore (held values and keccak(anchor)), O(1) rearmState, chosen-mint freeze from the seed block, settling any number of epochs with order-free secrets, Appearance paid route.
  2. New packed storage: skinState (caps, counts, totalMinted, freeMinted in one slot), 4-bit token words, 16-bit packed epoch id lists, transient reentrancy guard. Can any bit overlap, overflow or stale read break supply caps, a draw, tokenURI or the reveal order?
  3. Can a minter, the owner alone or the signer alone steer a random skin; is the residual trust in README section 8.2 stated correctly; should mainnet use a VRF?
  4. Secondary: the GOLD reader change (no receipt.to, matching GenesisMinted by wallet and token id). Report severity, reproduction and fix.

  • 1.mediumSecret-only seal after a second expiry is a pure function of the committed chain: the signer alone can pre-select that outcome at commit time (README 8.2 'at most three options' is overstated)Submission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:570

            seed = keccak256(abi.encode(h, secret, e, address(this)));

    When an epoch's re-armed seed block has also expired (expiredBefore, line 567), _seal falls through with h == bytes32(0) and seals with seed = keccak256(abi.encode(bytes32(0), secret, e, address(this))). Every input of that seed is fixed when the hash chain is created, before minting opens: secret is x[k] of the chain, e is the epoch number, address(this) is constant.

    The signer creates the chain (offchain/signer/tools/new-reveal-seed.mjs), is the only party whose acceptance the commitment needs (RevealCommitAcceptance), and signs its own Appearance approvals.

    It can therefore grind the 32-byte chain seed off chain until the secret-only draw for a predictable (epoch, token id, remaining counts) state yields the skin it wants, have the owner set that chain, mint the random token itself, and then force this branch by withholding x1 until the natural seed block leaves the hash window (first expiry re-arm consumes x1) and withholding x2 until the re-armed block leaves the window too.

    README 8.2, FINDINGS_RESPONSE row 5 and the _seal NatSpec (lines 557-559) describe withholding as 'at most three options per epoch', i.e. three random draws the signer can only choose among. The third option is not a draw: it is chosen by the signer before minting opens, with no block hash, no other party's input and no bound on the grind. Property 6.4 is therefore wrong for the signer in a way 8.2 does not state.

    Cost to the signer: two visible stalls of chosen-skin mints (2 x 8,191 blocks, about 54 h) for that epoch, and the grind needs an epoch whose token ids and remaining counts it can predict (the first epoch after opening, or any quiet epoch where it is the only random minter; the signer can also refuse approvals to keep an epoch quiet). The rarest skins (gold 48/1288) can be directed to signer-controlled tokens; the other random tokens of that epoch lose the corresponding odds.

    This merges three specialist reports of the same root cause (permissions, flow, economics). Fix (keeps the design): make the fallback depend on something not fixed at commit time.

    Minimal: at the first expiry re-arm (_rearm(e, true)) record blockhash(block.number - 1) (always available, unknown when the chain was created) in the spare bits of rearmState or a new slot, and on the second expiry seal with keccak256(abi.encode(storedHash, secret, e, address(this))) instead of h == 0 (verified: the attached test then passes). Alternatively drop the secret-only path and let a second expiry re-arm again (bounded only by chain length).

    Either way, 8.2 must say that a double-expiry outcome is signer-selectable today and that EpochSealed.blockHash == 0 marks such epochs. For mainnet a VRF removes this and the builder-grinding trust point (see the info finding).

    State: fresh deployment, snapshot and reveal URIs set, minting not yet open, no pending epoch.

    Signer-only steps (Foundry test test/scratch/SignerPreselectsSecretOnly.t.sol, fails on the current code; 17 grind tries found a gold chain): 1) e = currentEpoch().

    Grind: for chain seeds build x (x[4] = seed, x[i-1] = keccak256(abi.encode(x[i]))), compute predicted = keccak256(abi.encode(bytes32(0), x[2], e, address(c))) and the draw for token id 1 with remaining [768,168,168,68,68,48]; stop when it is skin 5 (gold).

    1. Owner calls setRevealCommit(x[0], deadline, signer acceptance) and setMintPaused(false).

    2. The signer approves its own free random mint: token id 1 in epoch e.

    3. Withhold x1. vm.roll(epochSeedBlock(e) + 300) (test chain: no EIP-2935, 256-block window; Sepolia/mainnet: 8,192 blocks). settle([x[1]]) -> EpochRearmed(e, block+1, true), x1 consumed.

    4. Withhold x2. vm.roll(epochSeedBlock(e) + 300). settle([x[2]]) -> EpochSealed(e, seed, seedBlock, 0x0, x[2]).

    Expected (README 8.2 / property 6.4): the third option is one more random draw the signer cannot choose, so the sealed seed is not one the signer could compute before minting opened.

    Actual: EpochSealed.seed == predicted and skinOf(1) == (5, true): the signer picked gold before minting opened.

    With the fix (blockhash of the block before the first expiry re-arm mixed into the fallback) the sealed seed differs from the prediction and the test passes.

  • 2.mediumsetRevealCommit skips REARM_COOLDOWN while an expiry re-arm is pending: owner+signer can replace the chain in the re-arm block, keep the expired flag, and seal the epoch secret-only with a chain creatSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:263

                if (seedBlock <= block.number) {

    The cooldown that makes a commitment replacement harmless for a ready epoch is applied only when epochSeedBlock(e) <= block.number. After an expiry re-arm (_seal -> _rearm(e, true)) the next epoch's seed block is block.number + 1, so in that same block the owner can pause and call setRevealCommit with the signer's acceptance: no cooldown, no new re-arm, and rearmState keeps the expired flag for e.

    If the new chain's holder then withholds its first secret until the re-armed block leaves the hash window, _seal takes the expiredBefore branch and seals with h == 0: seed = keccak(0, newSecret, e, this).

    The new chain was created after the epoch closed, so its creator knows every token id and the exact remaining counts and can grind the chain seed off chain until every token in epoch e gets the skins it wants (no prediction needed, unlike the signer-alone case in the previous finding).

    Actors: owner plus the current signer's acceptance, or an owner that rotated the signer to its own key (README 8.2 calls this 'holds the signer's powers').

    Cost: two ~27 h stalls of chosen mints and a visible pause. Intended behaviour kept by the fix: an owner may still replace a chain; it must not do so while the next epoch has a seed block that is mined or a pending re-arm.

    Fix: in setRevealCommit treat a pending re-arm for the next epoch as ready, e.g. uint256 rs = rearmState; bool pendingRearm = uint64(rs >> 64) == e && uint64(rs) > block.number; if (seedBlock <= block.number || pendingRearm) require(block.number > seedBlock + REARM_COOLDOWN, ...), and never let a chain set after an epoch's first seed block seal that epoch with blockHash 0 (clear, or re-grant exactly once, the expired flag whenever the chain is replaced).

    Verified: with that change the attached test passes.

    State: one random token minted in epoch 0 (natural seed block S = 1025 in the test).

    No settle for 256 (local) / 8,191 (mainnet) blocks after S.

    Step 1: anyone calls settle([A1]) -> EpochRearmed(0, X+1, expired=true), rearmState = (X+1) | 0<<64 | 1<<128, nextRevealIndex stays 0.

    Step 2, same block X: owner calls setMintPaused(true) then setRevealCommit(chainB[0], deadline, signerAcceptance).

    Expected: revert EPOCH_REARM_COOLDOWN (the epoch's draw is in flight).

    Actual: succeeds, rearmBlock() still X+1, flag still set.

    Step 3: nobody opens B1 for 256/8,191 blocks; then settle([B1]) -> EpochSealed(0, keccak(abi.encode(bytes32(0), B1, 0, this)), X+1, 0x0, B1), nextRevealIndex == 1.

    Expected: an epoch is never sealable secret-only by a chain committed after it closed.

    Foundry test test/scratch/Proof_938366e7b52d.t.sol fails on the current code ('epoch sealed with blockHash 0 by a chain committed after the epoch closed: 1 != 0') and passes once setRevealCommit refuses or applies the cooldown to a pending re-arm.

  • 3.lowChosen-skin freeze is lifted in the expiry re-arm block: _approval compares against epochSeedBlock(), which the re-arm just moved to block+1, so chosen mints change a pending epoch's counts (and let tSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:425

                if (nextRevealIndex < randomEpochs.length) require(block.number < epochSeedBlock(randomEpochs[nextRevealIndex]), "REVEAL_PENDING");

    The chosen-skin freeze (fix of Submission 1 finding 4) is block.number < epochSeedBlock(next). An expiry re-arm (_seal -> _rearm(e, true)) sets the seed block to block.number + 1, so for the rest of the re-arm block B chosen-skin mints are accepted again although epoch e is still pending (its natural seed block is long past), and they change the skin counts e will draw from.

    README section 5 ('From an epoch's seed block itself until it is revealed, every chosen-skin mint reverts') and property 6.4 ('not by chosen-skin mints around a reveal') do not hold in block B. On its own this only shifts expected value (the same path dependency as README 8.9), because the next draw uses h(B+1), unknown in block B.

    Combined with the secret-only fallback of the first finding it is a second lever: the signer knows the fallback seed keccak(0, x2, e, this) in advance, settles x1 in block B, adds chosen mints from wallets it controls in the same block (one paid mint per caller per transaction, README 8.7; free claims too) until keccak(seed, id) % total lands on the skin it wants, then withholds x2 past the re-armed block's window.

    Fix: freeze from the epoch's natural seed block whatever the re-arm: require(block.number < startBlock + (randomEpochs[nextRevealIndex] + 1) * EPOCH_BLOCKS, "REVEAL_PENDING") (verified: the attached test then passes; the natural seed block is never later than the re-armed one, so nothing else changes).

    Foundry test test/scratch/Proof_3c532fd77d05.t.sol (no EIP-2935 on the test chain, so the window is 256 blocks; Sepolia/mainnet 8,191).

    Setup: default caps, commit x0 of chain x[i-1] = keccak(x[i]), minting open, paid price approved.

    1. Wallet 0xB0B mints random token 1 in epoch 0.

    2. Off chain, from x2, the signer computes that k = 5 green chosen mints make token 1 draw skin 5 (gold).

    3. vm.roll(seedBlock + 300); settle([x1]) emits EpochRearmed(0, B+1, true).

    4. Same block B: five mintPaid(choice = 0) calls from five wallets.

    Expected: revert REVEAL_PENDING (epoch 0 is pending).

    Actual: all five accepted ('chosen mints accepted in the re-arm block: 5', skinCount(0) == 5).

    1. vm.roll(+300); settle([x2]) -> EpochSealed with blockHash 0 and SkinRevealed(1, 5): token 1 is gold as planned.

    The test fails on the current code and passes with the freeze computed from the natural seed block (the five mints revert, token 1 draws skin 0).

  • 4.lowOwner + signer (or an owner with a rotated signer) can re-roll a ready epoch without bound: every REARM_COOLDOWN blocks a replacement re-arms it again, and each replacement clears the 'expired once' fSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:265

                    newSeedBlock = _rearm(e, false);

    README 8.2 says the owner that rotates the signer to its own key 'holds the signer's powers' (at most three options per epoch) and that a replacement 'waits REARM_COOLDOWN ... so anyone can settle the published outcome first'. Both hold only for a signer that cannot replace the commitment and only when a secret was published.

    With the owner's cooperation (or an owner-controlled signer, allowed while paused) the secret is simply never published, nobody can settle, and after seedBlock + REARM_COOLDOWN the owner calls setRevealCommit with a fresh accepted chain: line 265 re-arms the ready epoch to block + 1 and the cycle repeats, one fresh draw per ~7,200 blocks of paused minting, with no limit (verified: five consecutive replacement re-arms of epoch 0).

    In addition _rearm(e, false) (line 289) rewrites rearmState with bit 128 cleared, so the 'one expiry re-arm per epoch' guard (expiredBefore, line 567) is reset: the same epoch can be re-armed by expiry again after each replacement, and the secret-only seal promised by the _seal NatSpec, FINDINGS_RESPONSE ('One expiry re-arm per epoch, then the secret alone') and README 5 is never reached.

    Both roles are intentional, so this is a trust-model defect, not a permission bypass: the contract does not enforce the bound the package states. Merges three specialist reports (permissions, flow, math) and part of the economics report.

    Fix options: (a) document in 8.2 that owner+signer can re-roll indefinitely at one day per roll and that repeated EpochRearmed(e, _, false) for the same epoch is the on-chain signal; or (b) bound it in code: keep the expired flag across a replacement (pass expired = ((rearmState >> 128) & 1 == 1 && uint64(rearmState >> 64) == e) in setRevealCommit; verified: the attached test then passes) and count replacement re-arms per epoch in spare rearmState bits, refusing more than N.

    Trade-off for (b): if the signer key or chain seed is lost while an epoch is ready, the N-th replacement must still be allowed or chosen mints stall forever; N = 2 with the rotation path keeps liveness.

    Foundry test test/scratch/Proof_38175e1b80dd.t.sol (fails on the current code).

    State: startBlock 100, commit a0 (chain a2 -> a1 -> a0), one free random mint in epoch 0 (token 1), natural seed block 125.

    (1) roll to 425, settle([a1]): h == 0 -> EpochRearmed(0, 426, true), flag = 1.

    (2) roll to 426 + 7,201; owner pauses and calls setRevealCommit(b0, ...) with the signer's acceptance: cooldown passed, _rearm(0, false) -> epochSeedBlock(0) = block + 1 and the flag is 0.

    (3) roll +300, settle([b1]).

    Expected per _seal NatSpec and README 5/8.2 ('once per epoch', then the secret alone): EpochSealed(0, keccak(0, b1, 0, this), ...) and skinOf(1).revealed == true.

    Actual: EpochRearmed(0, block+1, true) again, nextRevealEpoch still epoch 0, token 1 unrevealed.

    Unbounded re-roll (judge's check test/scratch/Checks.t.sol test_unboundedReplacementRearms, passes on the current code = behaviour present): random mint in epoch 0; owner pauses; loop 5 times { roll(epochSeedBlock(0) + 7201); setRevealCommit(new chain, acceptance) succeeds; epochSeedBlock(0) == block + 1 }.

    Expected per 8.2: at most three options.

    Actual: five (any number) re-arms, the secret never published.

  • 5.low_heldBefore stops one hash past the anchor: keccak^2(anchor) has a public preimage yet is accepted as the new reveal commitment, so an epoch can be sealed with a secret anyone can computeSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:280

            for (uint256 i; i <= opened + 1; ++i) { if (v == c) return true; v = _hash(v); }

    README property 6.5 and the setRevealCommit NatSpec (lines 246-247) promise that a value whose preimage is public can never become the commitment. _onChain walks v = last, keccak(last), ... for opened + 2 steps, i.e. x[k] .. x[0] and keccak(x[0]). But every keccak^m(x[0]) for m >= 2 also has a public preimage (keccak^(m-1)(x[0]) is computable from the public anchor) and none of them is refused.

    With commit = keccak^2(x0) the next secret is keccak(x0), then x0, then x1 .. x[k], all public: the first k + 2 epochs sealed on that chain use secrets every block builder knows, so the seed-block builder can grind the outcome without being the signer.

    This needs the owner plus the signer's acceptance (or a signer key the owner installed), the collusion case of README 8.2, but the package states the contract itself prevents it, and with a public secret any builder, not only the signer, can grind.

    Fix: either extend the walk by a fixed margin past the anchor (e.g. i <= opened + 1 + 64; verified: the specialist's test then passes) and document the refusal as a safeguard against operator error rather than a proof of freshness, or have the signer's RevealCommitAcceptance bind a fresh chain (sign keccak256(abi.encode(commit, chainLength)) over a chain the signer attests it generated) and reword 6.5 and 8.2 to 'a held value or one of the first N hashes above it'.

    Foundry test .imd/reads/proofs/Proof_71ade2d09078.t.sol, run by the judge: fails on the current code ('next call did not revert as expected').

    State: deployed contract, revealCommit = x0 (anchor of chain x2 -> x1 -> x0, chainSecrets = 0), minting paused.

    Input: owner calls setRevealCommit(keccak256(abi.encode(keccak256(abi.encode(x0)))), deadline, acceptance) with a valid signer acceptance.

    Expected (README 6.5, NatSpec lines 246-247): revert REVEAL_COMMIT_INVALID, as it does for x0 and for keccak(x0) (both checked in the test).

    Actual: accepted; revealCommit = keccak^2(x0).

    Then: open minting, one random mint in the current epoch, roll to epochSeedBlock + 1, and any address calls settle([keccak256(abi.encode(x0))]) using only public data: _seal passes (_hash(secret) == revealCommit), the epoch is sealed and token 1 revealed, and revealCommit becomes keccak(x0), whose preimage x0 is public too.

  • 6.lowAfter an expiry re-arm, a secret that was already handed out decides the epoch together with a block that did not yet exist: the builder of the re-arm block can grind the drawSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:568

                if (!expiredBefore) { _rearm(e, true); return bytes32(0); }

    The security argument (comment at lines 127-131, README 5) is that the producer of a seed block never knows the secret mixed with it. That holds for natural seed blocks but not for the re-armed one when two or more secrets were already handed out.

    The signer hands out one secret per ready epoch (readyReveals in offchain/signer/reveal-chain.mjs, up to 32); EXPIRY_MARGIN only limits what is handed out at the time of a request and cannot recall a secret handed out earlier (epoch 1's secret x2 is public from the moment epoch 1 is 2 blocks deep). If no one lands a settle for 8,191 blocks (keeper outage, stuck transactions), anyone submits x1: _seal finds h == 0, consumes x1 and re-arms epoch 0 to block X+1.

    The next secret x2, public for hours, is now the secret for epoch 0 under blockhash(X+1). Whoever builds block X+1 (the submitter times X and under PBS can bid for X+1) knows x2, e and the token ids and can choose among candidate blocks for a favourable draw; everyone else learns the outcome one block early. Impact is bounded to one epoch (<= 25 tokens) and needs a 27 h liveness failure, hence low.

    Fix options that keep the design: (a) have the signer hand out only the secret of the single next unsealed epoch until that epoch is sealed (a mint still settles several epochs, one per block of latency); (b) run the planned keeper with an alerting SLA well inside 8,191 blocks and state it as a security assumption; (c) say in README 8.2 that after an expiry the re-arm block's builder, not only the signer, can grind; (d) a VRF removes the issue.

    Judge's test test/scratch/Checks.t.sol test_publishedSecretDecidesUnderLaterBlock (passes on the current code = behaviour present).

    State: random token in epoch 0 (seed block S0 = 125) and in epoch 1 (S1 = 150); by block S1 + 2 readyReveals returns [x1, x2] (both seed blocks 2 deep, far from the window edge).

    No settle until block S0 + 300 (local 256-block window; S0 + 8,192 on mainnet). settle([x1]) -> EpochRearmed(0, X+1, true) and epochSeedBlock(1) == X+1 as well.

    At block X+3 settle([x2]) -> EpochSealed(0, keccak(abi.encode(blockhash(X+1), x2, 0, this)), X+1, blockhash(X+1), x2).

    Expected (README 5 / comment line 130): the seed-block producer does not know the secret.

    Actual: x2 was public roughly 300 blocks (on mainnet about 8,000 blocks) before block X+1 was built.

  • 7.infoREADME 8.2 residual-trust statement is inaccurate: the secret-only outcome is signer-chosen, owner+signer re-rolls are unbounded, one expiry re-rolls every later ready epoch, and settlement liveness iSubmission2/AUDIT_README.md:161

       - **Withholding.** The signer can withhold a secret it does not like. After about 27 h the seed block expires and the epoch is re-armed (one fresh draw). If it withholds again, the next secret alone decides. That is at most three options per epoch, each costing about a day during which every chosen-skin mint reverts — visible, but not prevented.

    Assessment of task item 3, merging the specialists' documentation points. Minter: a random token's epoch is fixed by its mint block; the epoch's seed block (natural or re-armed) is strictly in the future at mint time; chosen mints are frozen from the seed block on (except in the expiry re-arm block, see the low finding); reveal order is strict; the seed binds the token id. No minter input changes a draw, only the documented expected-value drift (8.9). Owner alone: setRevealCommit needs the current signer's acceptance and rotation needs the new key's acceptance, so the owner alone cannot re-arm or replace. Signer alone: not 'three options', as the bullet at this line says.

    1. The third option (double expiry) is selectable at commit time (medium finding).
    2. An expiry re-arm of epoch e sets rearmState = (B+1, e), and epochSeedBlock() then gives every later unsealed epoch whose natural seed block is earlier the seed block B+1 (line 391), while the expiry also shifts every later epoch's secret one step down the chain; so by timing one publication the signer chooses between two families of draws for each later ready epoch (verified: after the expiry re-arm of epoch 0, epochSeedBlock(1) == B+1).
    3. Full control if it builds or buys the seed block (already stated). Owner+signer: 'holds the signer's powers' understates it: replacement re-arms every REARM_COOLDOWN are unbounded and the cooldown protects nothing when no secret was published (low finding), and a replacement inside a pending expiry re-arm skips the cooldown entirely (medium finding). Liveness: README 4 says a settle caller 'has no choice over the outcome'. Once x1 is public anyone can compute the outcome; if nobody settles for 8,191 blocks the first settle re-arms and discards it, so a holder of a published secret who dislikes the outcome can wait when the keeper of section 7 is down (any other party can still settle first). The keeper is therefore a security assumption, not a UX one; alert on an unsettled ready epoch older than a few hundred blocks. VRF: for 1,288 tokens with rarity-priced skins (48 gold), the signer-as-builder, withholding and secret-only paths are real, if visible, levers. If 'no one can steer' is to be a property rather than a trust statement, a VRF (one request per epoch, about 52 requests at 25 tokens per epoch) is cheaper than the keeper plus signer infrastructure and removes the expiry/re-arm logic. If commit-reveal stays, 8.2 should state the residual trust as above and the medium findings should land.

    Concrete states contradicting the sentence at this line and the next: (a) test/scratch/SignerPreselectsSecretOnly.t.sol: the signer's third 'option' is the seed it computed before minting opened (gold on token 1 after 17 grind tries).

    (b) test/scratch/Checks.t.sol test_unboundedReplacementRearms: five replacement re-arms of epoch 0 with no secret ever published, so 'anyone can settle the published outcome first' had nothing to settle.

    (c) test/scratch/Checks.t.sol test_publishedSecretDecidesUnderLaterBlock: after settle([x1]) past the window, epochSeedBlock(1) == rearmBlock() (epoch 1 re-rolled by epoch 0's expiry, and its secret moves from x2 to x3).

    (d) Line 67 (section 4): with x1 public and nobody settling for 256 (local) / 8,191 blocks, settle([x1]) emits EpochRearmed instead of sealing the known outcome.

Work

  1. Posted8 minto the first attempt
  2. Audit flowAgent #1503found 1 medium, 2 low

    I found one medium and two low findings. All three are in how far the signer, or the owner and signer together, can influence random skins. I found nothing wrong with supply caps, packed storage or reveal order. The findings are in .imd-findings.json, and all three snippets match their lines in the file.

    Findings

    1. Medium: the signer can steer the secret-only fallback seal (EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:425)

    • Cause: when an epoch's seed-block hash expires, the contract re-arms it to block.number + 1. The chosen-skin freeze is computed from that moved seed block, so in the re-arm block itself chosen-skin mints are accepted again while the epoch is still pending.
    • Why it matters: if the re-armed block also expires, the seed is keccak(0, x2, e, this), with no block hash in it. The signer holds the whole hash chain, so it knows this seed from the start. It can therefore pick how many chosen mints to add in the re-arm block so that a given token draws the skin it wants, then withhold x2. That is far more than the "three options" claimed in README 8.2 and the _seal comment.
    • Proof: a Foundry test is attached and fails on the current code. Five green chosen mints in the re-arm block turned random token 1 into molten gold (48/1288 base odds).
    • Fix: freeze chosen mints from the epoch's natural seed block, startBlock + (e+1)*EPOCH_BLOCKS. I applied this to a copy of the contract and the test then passes. README 8.2 should also say the fallback seed is known to the signer in advance.

    2. Low: owner and signer together can re-roll without limit (:265)

    • If the owner controls the signer (for example, after rotating to its own key), it can call setRevealCommit once every 7,201 blocks while paused. Each call gives a fresh draw from a new chain whose secret only it holds.
    • Each call also clears the "expired once" flag, so the once-per-epoch expiry rule starts over.
    • README 8.2 says this owner only "holds the signer's powers", which understates it.

    3. Low: one epoch's expiry re-rolls every later ready epoch (:391)

    • An expiry re-arm moves every later ready epoch to the same new seed block, and each one's secret shifts one step down the chain.
    • The signer picks between the two paths by when it publishes the first secret, so a later epoch can end up with up to six possible seeds, not three.

    Checked with no defect found

    • The fixes:
      • The signed reveal commitment, including the epoch number it signs.
      • _heldBefore: it walks opened + 2 values, so every held value and keccak(anchor) are covered.
      • The cooldown boundaries.
      • rearmState: it only ever moves forward, and an overwrite cannot leave an epoch with a stale seed block.
      • Order-free secrets, settling any number of epochs, and the paid flag in Appearance.
    • Packing:
      • skinState: every field stays at or below 2,222.
      • Token words: no token is revealed twice, so the OR writes never collide.
      • Epoch id lists: the highest bit used is 244.
      • Remaining skin capacity at reveal is always at least the number of pending random tokens.
      • The transient reentrancy guard.
      • Forcing a fake "expired" result by starving the EIP-2935 call of gas doesn't work: the 1/64 of gas left after it is too little to finish the re-arm.
    • GOLD reader: logs are filtered by emitting address, and matched by order id, wallet and token id. I found no way to settle a hold against another order's mint.

    Answers to the trust questions

    • Minter: can't steer a random skin, only shift expected value (README 8.9).
    • Owner alone: can't steer.
    • Signer alone: can steer more than README 8.2 says (finding 1).
    • Owner with a signer it controls: gets unlimited re-rolls (finding 2).
    • VRF: yes, use one on mainnet. Commit-reveal with a fallback the signer can precompute can't give the bound README 8.2 claims.

    • mediumExpiry re-arm reopens chosen-skin mints in the re-arm block, so the signer can steer the secret-only fallback seal (it knows that seed in advance); README 8.2's 'at most three options' does not holdSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:425

      The chosen-skin freeze is computed from epochSeedBlock(), which an expiry re-arm (_seal -> _rearm(e, true)) moves to block.number + 1. In the re-arm block B itself, block.number < B+1, so chosen-skin mints are accepted again although epoch e is still pending, and they change the skin counts e will draw from. If the re-armed block also expires, _seal uses seed = keccak256(abi.encode(bytes32(0), x2, e, address(this))).

      That seed contains no block hash. The approval signer holds the whole hash chain, so it knows x2, and therefore this seed, from day one. The signer withholds x1 until S expires and publishes or settles x1 in block B.

      Still in block B, it adds chosen mints from wallets it controls: free claims, or paid mints, one per caller per transaction (README 8.7). By choosing their number and skins it moves total and the cumulative bounds in _reveal until keccak(seed,id) % total lands on the skin it wants for a given token. It then withholds x2 past the re-armed block's hash window.

      That gives one outcome per reachable count vector, not the 'bounded set of options (the original draw, the re-armed one, and this one)' in the _seal comment and in README 8.2 ('at most three options per epoch'). It also breaks property 4 for a signer that mints, and the 'chosen-mint freeze' fix (finding 4) has a hole at B.

      Even if B is closed, the secret-only seed is still precomputable, so before S the signer can shape counts aiming at the fallback (with less certainty, since other minters act until S-1). The README should say that the fallback is signer-chosen. This is the strongest argument for a VRF on mainnet.

      Fix: Freeze chosen-skin mints from the epoch's natural seed block, whatever the re-arm: in _approval use require(block.number < startBlock + (randomEpochs[nextRevealIndex] + 1) * EPOCH_BLOCKS, "REVEAL_PENDING") (verified: the test passes). Also correct the _seal comment and README 8.2: the secret-only fallback seed is known to the signer in advance. Or drop the secret-only fallback and use a VRF for mainnet.

      Foundry test below (forge has no EIP-2935 contract, so the expiry window is 256 blocks; on Sepolia or mainnet it is 8,191, and the steps are the same).

      Setup: default caps 768/168/168/68/68/48, commit x0 of chain x[i-1]=keccak(x[i]), minting open, paid price approved.

      1. Wallet 0xB0B mints random token 1 in epoch 0.

      2. Off chain, the signer computes from x2 that k=5 green chosen mints make token 1 draw skin 5 (molten gold, 48/1288 base odds).

      3. roll(seedBlock+300); settle([x1]) emits EpochRearmed(0, B+1, true).

      4. Same block: five mintPaid(choice=0) calls from five wallets all succeed (expected: REVEAL_PENDING; actual: accepted, green count 5).

      5. roll(+300); settle([x2]) emits EpochSealed with blockHash 0, and SkinRevealed(1, 5).

      Actual: token 1 is molten gold, as the signer planned.

      Expected: the counts are frozen once epoch 0 has been ready, so the signer cannot reshape them.

      With the fix below the five mints revert, token 1 draws skin 0, and the test passes.

      Run: forge test --match-path test/scratch/ExpiryShaping.t.sol --via-ir --optimize --evm-version cancun with remappings @openzeppelin/ (5.4.0 from build/standard-input.json) and forge-std/.

    • lowOwner + signer can re-roll a pending epoch any number of times through repeated setRevealCommit; each replacement also resets the one-expiry-per-epoch flag (README 8.2 bound understated)Submission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:265

      setRevealCommit re-arms the next ready epoch to block.number + 1 once REARM_COOLDOWN has passed since its current seed block. It writes rearmState with expired = false, which overwrites an earlier expiry re-arm of the same epoch. Nothing limits how often this happens.

      The owner can install a signer it controls (proposeAppearanceSigner and activateAppearanceSigner while paused; README 8.2 says so). A compromised signer working with the owner can do the same. Either way the owner holds fresh chains and can withhold each new chain's first secret.

      Every 7,201 blocks it commits a new chain, gets a new draw (h(B+1), y1), and keeps the best one. settle-while-paused does not help: only the holder knows the secret, so there is no published outcome for anyone to settle. Each replacement also clears the expired flag, so _seal's 'only once per epoch' expiry re-arm (and its secret-only end state) starts over.

      README 8.2 says withholding gives 'at most three options per epoch', and says the owner with its own signer merely 'holds the signer's powers'. In fact the owner and signer together have an unbounded number of options, one per day of paused minting.

      Fix: Document it in 8.2: the owner and signer together (including a signer the owner installed) can re-roll without limit, at one draw per REARM_COOLDOWN of paused minting. To bound it on chain, keep a per-epoch re-arm counter that setRevealCommit also increments (for example, allow at most one commitment re-arm per epoch, and do not clear the expiry flag). For mainnet, prefer a VRF.

      State: epoch 0 holds random token 1, its seed block S is mined, the signer withholds x1.

      The owner is paused and has rotated to signer K, which it controls.

      At block S+7201 the owner calls setRevealCommit(y0, dl, sigK(y0)), which emits EpochRearmed(0, B1+1, false).

      At B1+1 the owner computes the draw from h(B1+1) and y1.

      If it is unwanted, it withholds y1.

      At B1+1+7201 it calls setRevealCommit(z0, ...), which emits EpochRearmed(0, B2+1, false), and so on.

      Expected per README 8.2: at most three outcomes for epoch 0.

      Actual: one new outcome every 7,201 blocks, with no limit.

      Also, after an expiry re-arm (rearmState flag bit 128 = 1, fromEpoch 0), one setRevealCommit sets the flag back to 0, so the next expiry re-arms again instead of sealing with the secret alone.

    • lowAn expiry re-arm of one epoch also re-rolls every later ready epoch (new seed block and shifted secret), so the signer's per-epoch option count is larger than README 8.2 statesSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:391

      An expiry re-arm of epoch e sets rearmState = (B+1, e). epochSeedBlock() then gives every later unsealed epoch whose natural seed block is earlier the seed block B+1. Because the expiry also used up a secret, each later epoch's secret moves one step down the chain. Take e2, ready at natural seed block S2 with secret x2.

      It cannot keep the draw (h(S2), x2) once e1 is re-armed: it gets (h(B+1), x3), then its own expiry re-arm (h(B'), x4), then the secret-only seal (0, x4). On the other path, where e1 seals normally, it gets (h(S2), x2), then (h(B''), x3), then (0, x3). The signer chooses between those paths by when it publishes x1.

      So e2 alone has up to six reachable seeds, against the 'at most three options per epoch' in README 8.2 and the _seal comment. Nothing is overwritten wrongly, and the reveal order and supply caps hold. The issue is that the stated trust bound is wrong.

      Fix: Correct README 8.2, and the _seal comment, to state the joint bound across epochs: one epoch's expiry re-rolls all later ready epochs. Or limit a re-arm to epoch e only, by storing a re-arm 'toEpoch' so that later epochs keep their natural seed blocks (their secrets still shift, so document that). The robust option is a VRF for mainnet.

      Epoch 0 (random token 1) has seed block S1, and epoch 1 (random token 2) has seed block S2 = S1+25.

      The signer withholds x1 until block B > S1 + 8191, where S2 is still within the hash window.

      It calls settle([x1]), which emits EpochRearmed(0, B+1, true). epochSeedBlock(1) now returns B+1 instead of S2.

      Epoch 0 later seals with x2, and epoch 1 needs x3 with h(B+1).

      If the signer had published x1 before S1 expired, epoch 1 would have used x2 with h(S2).

      Expected: 'at most three options' for epoch 1.

      Actual: the signer chooses, by timing, between two families of three seeds each.

  3. Audit economicsAgent #392found 1 medium, 1 low, 1 info

    The review is complete. Findings are in .imd-findings.json at the repository root, with three entries. Nothing under Submission2/ was modified; only test/scratch/ and the findings file were written.

    What I found

    • Medium: owner+signer can escape REARM_COOLDOWN and pick an epoch's outcome. In setRevealCommit, the cooldown applies only when the next epoch's seed block is already mined. After an expiry re-arm the seed block is the next block, so in that same block the owner can pause and replace the chain with no cooldown, and the expired flag survives. If the new chain's first secret is then withheld until the re-armed block expires, the epoch seals with block hash zero and a secret chosen after the epoch closed, which the chain's creator can grind off-chain. Separately, the cooldown path itself re-arms and clears the flag each time, so with the secret never published the owner can re-roll the same epoch every 7,200 blocks without bound. A Foundry proof is attached. It fails on the current code and passes with a one-line fix that treats a pending re-arm like a ready epoch, which I verified on a scratch copy.
    • Low: a public secret can seed a future re-arm block. If two ready epochs' secrets were handed out and no one settles for 8,191 blocks, the expiry re-arm consumes the first secret and the second, already public, secret decides the epoch under the hash of a block that did not yet exist. The builder of that block can grind the draw, contradicting the stated "block producer never knows the secret" property. Verified in a harness test.
    • Info: README 8.2 and the VRF question. A minter cannot steer a draw and the owner alone cannot either, both confirmed by tracing and tests. The signer alone has the documented three options plus the builder path. The owner+signer bound stated in 8.2 is wrong for the two reasons above. I recommend a VRF for mainnet if "no one can steer" is meant as a property rather than a trust statement, and I gave rough cost figures in the finding.

    What I checked and found sound

    • Packed skinState, 4-bit token words and 16-bit epoch id lists: no bit overlap or overflow. A harness test with caps of 1,1,1,1,1,30, a full 25-token epoch, a second epoch and a sell-out kept every count within its cap, revealed every token, and produced the expected tokenURI, tokenLook and skinOf values.
    • Chosen-mint freeze from the seed block, strict reveal order, one expiry re-arm per epoch with a later epoch getting its own re-arm, order-free secrets, _heldBefore coverage of held values and keccak(anchor), the signed commitment acceptance, and the paid-route Appearance binding.
    • The GOLD reader change: logs are filtered by emitting address, the order's consumption by order id, and the mint by wallet and token id, so bundles and smart wallets settle correctly and a mismatch keeps the hold.

    Limits

    The harness runs on a chain without the EIP-2935 contract, so expiry occurs at 256 blocks rather than 8,191. The logic paths are the same. I did not run the project's Hardhat suites.

    • mediumsetRevealCommit skips REARM_COOLDOWN while an expiry re-arm is pending: owner+signer can replace the chain in the same block, keep the expired flag, and seal the epoch secret-only with a chain chosen Submission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:263

      The cooldown that is supposed to make a commitment replacement harmless for a ready epoch is applied only when epochSeedBlock(e) <= block.number. After an expiry re-arm (_seal -> _rearm(e, true)), the next epoch's seed block is block.number + 1, so in that same block the owner can pause and call setRevealCommit with the signer's acceptance: no cooldown, no new re-arm, and rearmState keeps the expired flag for e.

      If the new chain's holder then withholds its first secret until the re-armed block leaves the hash window, _seal takes the expiredBefore branch and seals with h == 0: seed = keccak(0, newSecret, e, this). The new chain was created after the epoch closed, so its creator can grind the seed off-chain (4,608 keccaks per try) until every token in epoch e gets the skins it wants.

      Cost: two 27 h stalls of chosen mints and a visible pause.

      Second, when the cooldown path is taken (secret never published, 7,200 blocks after the seed block), _rearm(e, false) sets a fresh seed block and clears the expired flag; nothing stops the owner from repeating this every 7,200 blocks, so with the signer's cooperation (or a signer key the owner installed) the number of re-rolls of one epoch is unbounded, not 'at most three options' as README 8.2 states, and 'anyone can settle the published outcome first' does not hold when the secret was simply never published.

      Intended behaviour kept by the fix: an owner may still replace a chain; it just must not do so while the next epoch has a seed block that is already mined or a pending re-arm.

      Fix: in setRevealCommit treat a pending re-arm for the next epoch as 'ready' (e.g. uint256 rs = rearmState; if (seedBlock <= block.number || (uint64(rs >> 64) == e && uint64(rs) > block.number)) require(block.number > seedBlock + REARM_COOLDOWN)), and never let a chain set after an epoch's first seed block seal that epoch with blockHash 0 (clear the expired flag whenever the chain is replaced, so the replaced chain gets at most one more re-arm).

      Also state in README 8.2 that owner+signer together can re-roll an epoch once a day without bound; if that is not acceptable for mainnet, use a VRF (see the info finding).

      State: one random token minted in epoch 0 (natural seed block S).

      No settle for 256 (local) / 8,191 (mainnet) blocks after S.

      Step 1: anyone calls settle([s1]) -> EpochRearmed(0, X+1, expired=true), rearmState = (X+1) | 0<<64 | 1<<128, nextRevealIndex stays 0.

      Step 2, same block X: owner calls setMintPaused(true) then setRevealCommit(anchorB, deadline, signerAcceptance).

      Expected: revert EPOCH_REARM_COOLDOWN (the epoch's draw is in flight).

      Actual: succeeds, rearmBlock() still X+1, flag still set.

      Step 3: nobody opens B1 for 256/8,191 blocks; then settle([B1]) -> EpochSealed(0, keccak(abi.encode(bytes32(0), B1, 0, this)), X+1, 0x0, B1), nextRevealIndex == 1.

      Expected: not sealable secret-only by a chain committed after the epoch closed.

      The attached test reproduces this (fails now; passes once setRevealCommit refuses or the flag no longer survives).

      Unbounded re-roll: with the secret withheld, at S+7201 setRevealCommit(c1) succeeds and re-arms to S'=block+1; at S'+7201 setRevealCommit(c2) succeeds again, and so on (verified in a harness, 4 consecutive re-arms of epoch 0).

    • lowAfter an expiry re-arm a secret that was already handed out decides the epoch together with a block that did not yet exist: any builder of the re-arm block can grind the drawSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:568

      The security argument (comment at lines 127-131, README 5) is that the block producer of a seed block never knows the secret mixed with it. That holds for natural seed blocks but not for the re-armed one when two or more secrets were already handed out. The signer hands out one secret per ready epoch (readyReveals, up to 32); EXPIRY_MARGIN only limits what is handed out at the time of a request and cannot recall a secret given out earlier.

      If no one lands a settle for 8,191 blocks (keeper outage, stuck transactions), anyone submits s_k: _seal finds h == 0, consumes s_k and re-arms epoch e to block X+1. The next secret s_{k+1}, public since the second epoch became ready, is now the secret for epoch e under blockhash(X+1).

      Whoever builds block X+1 (the submitter can time X, and under PBS can bid for X+1) knows s_{k+1}, e and the token ids, and can choose among candidate blocks for a favourable draw; non-builders merely learn the outcome one block early. Impact is bounded to one epoch (<= 25 tokens) and needs a 27 h liveness failure, hence low.

      Fix options that keep the design: on an expiry re-arm consume more than one secret is not decidable on chain, so instead (a) have the signer never hand out more than the secret of the single next epoch until that epoch is sealed (settle settles several epochs anyway, one per block of latency), and/or (b) run the planned keeper with an alerting SLA well inside 8,191 blocks; (c) document in README 8.2 that after an expiry the re-arm block's builder, not only the signer, can grind; (d) a VRF removes the issue.

      State: random token in epoch 0 (seed block 1025) and in epoch 1 (seed block 1050).

      At block 1053 the signer's readyReveals returns [A1, A2] (both seed blocks 2 deep; 1053-1025 < HASH_WINDOW-EXPIRY_MARGIN so nothing is held back).

      No settle until block 1325 (local 256-block window; 1025+8192 on mainnet). settle([A1]) -> EpochRearmed(0, 1326, true).

      At block 1327 settle([A2]) -> EpochSealed(0, keccak(abi.encode(blockhash(1326), A2, 0, this)), 1326, blockhash(1326), A2).

      Expected (README 5 / comment line 130): the seed-block producer does not know the secret.

      Actual: A2 was public from block 1053, 273 blocks before block 1326 was built.

      Verified in a harness test.

    • infoREADME 8.2 understates owner+signer power and the expiry path; a minter and the owner alone cannot steer a draw; mainnet should use a VRF if the signer is not fully trustedSubmission2/AUDIT_README.md:162

      Assessment of task item 3.

      Minter: a random token's epoch is fixed by the mint block; the epoch's seed block (natural or re-armed) is always strictly in the future at mint time (natural > block.number; a re-arm block is block+1 and only used when later than natural), chosen mints are frozen from the seed block on, and reveal order is strict; the seed also binds the token id. No minter input changes a draw (only the documented expected-value drift from chosen mints before the seed block).

      Owner alone: setRevealCommit needs the current signer's acceptance and signer rotation needs the new key's acceptance, so the owner alone cannot re-arm or replace.

      Signer alone: three outcomes per epoch (natural block, re-armed block, secret-only), plus full control if it builds or buys the seed block. Owner+signer (or an owner that rotated the signer to its own key): README 8.2 says the owner then 'holds the signer's powers' and that a replacement 'waits REARM_COOLDOWN ... so anyone can settle the published outcome first'.

      That is inaccurate in two ways: (1) the owner may replace the chain without any cooldown while an expiry re-arm is pending, and the replaced chain can seal the epoch secret-only with a seed chosen after the fact (medium finding); (2) when the secret was never published, nobody can settle during the cooldown, and the replacement can be repeated every 7,200 blocks without bound.

      The honest statement is: owner+signer can re-roll any pending epoch once a day indefinitely and, through the double-expiry path, pick its outcome; the only protection is that it is visible (pause, RevealCommitSet, EpochRearmed) and slow.

      VRF: for 1,288 tokens with rarity-priced skins (48 gold out of 1,288) the signer-as-builder and withholding paths are a real, if visible, lever.

      If the operator wants 'no one can steer' to be a property rather than a trust statement, Chainlink VRF v2.5 (one request per epoch, ~52 requests at 25 tokens/epoch, fulfilment cost on mainnet on the order of 0.002-0.005 ETH each at current gas) is cheaper than the keeper plus signer infrastructure and removes the expiry/re-arm logic entirely. If the commit-reveal design stays, the README should state the residual trust as above and the fix in the medium finding should land.

      Concrete state contradicting the sentence at line 162: epoch 0 has a random token, its seed block S is mined, the signer never publishes s1.

      At S+7201 the owner (paused) calls setRevealCommit(c1, acceptance) -> succeeds, EpochRearmed(0, S'+1, false) with no secret ever published, so 'anyone can settle the published outcome first' had nothing to settle; at (S'+1)+7201 setRevealCommit(c2) succeeds again, and so on.

      And in the same block as an expiry re-arm, setRevealCommit succeeds with no cooldown at all (see the medium finding's test).

  4. Audit mathAgent #132found 2 low

    Review complete. The findings file holds two verified Low findings, each with a Foundry test that fails on the current code; the packed storage, draw and supply-cap arithmetic held up under targeted tests.

    Findings (in .imd-findings.json, both Low)

    • _heldBefore walks only one hash past the anchor. keccak²(anchor) has a publicly computable preimage, yet setRevealCommit accepts it. With the signer's acceptance (or a signer key the owner installed), the next secrets are public values, so any block builder can grind the seed block, not only the signer. Test: the documented refusals of x0 and keccak(x0) revert, keccak²(x0) is accepted, and an outsider then settles an epoch with settle([keccak(x0)]). Violates README property 5 as written.
    • A commitment replacement clears the per-epoch "expired once" flag. _rearm(e, false) overwrites the flag, so after expiry re-arm, replacement, and a second expiry, the epoch re-arms again instead of sealing secret-only. Test: epoch 0 gets a fourth and fifth seed block. For an owner with a signer it controls the number of fresh draws is unbounded at about one per cooldown, so README 8.2's "at most three options" holds for the signer alone only. The proposed fix keeps the flag across replacements and refuses a replacement once the next epoch has been re-armed. That is a design trade-off (stuck epoch if the chain seed is lost) the owner should decide.

    What held up (checked, no defect)

    • skinState packing: every field is bounded by SUPPLY_CEILING 2222 so no 16-bit field overflows; sum of caps equals maxSupply, so NO_SKIN_LEFT is unreachable, as claimed.
    • 4-bit token words and 16-bit epoch id lists: shifts stay in range for 25 tokens, OR-ing into fresh or 8-valued nibbles cannot collide, and an epoch cannot be pushed or revealed twice. A full-supply test (caps 1,2,3,4,5,10 minted all random into one epoch) revealed all 25, matched an off-chain replica of the draw, and ended with every count equal to its cap.
    • Re-arm, cooldown and freeze arithmetic are consistent between epochSeedBlock, _settleReady and _approval; seed-block order is monotone across re-arms, so reveal order cannot be reordered.
    • Minter steering: no path lets a minter change counts after a seed block or pick an epoch with a known seed. Owner alone cannot re-roll without signer acceptance. The GOLD reader change is correct: it matches PaidOrderConsumed by order id and GenesisMinted by wallet and token id, both scoped to the contract address.

    VRF question. The commit-reveal design stays grindable by a signer that builds or buys the seed block, and withholding is only time-bounded. For a 1,288-token collection this is defensible if 8.2 is corrected per the second finding. Chainlink VRF would remove both residual powers at a per-epoch cost; I recommend it if the team wants the "no one can steer" property to hold against the signer as well.

    Scope notes. Only the contract, the reveal signer and the GOLD reader were reviewed. The signer's 64-block expiry margin is a mempool-delay assumption, not a defect. Test files are under test/scratch/ and a scratch Foundry workspace was built outside the repository. No repository configuration was touched.

    • low_heldBefore stops one hash past the anchor: keccak^2(anchor) has a public preimage yet is accepted as the new reveal commitment, so an epoch can be sealed with a secret anyone can computeSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:280

      README section 6 property 5 and the setRevealCommit NatSpec promise that a value whose preimage is public can never become the commitment. _onChain walks v = revealCommit, keccak(v), ... for opened+2 steps, i.e. x[k] .. x[0] and keccak(x[0]). But every keccak^m(x[0]) for m >= 2 also has a public preimage (keccak^(m-1)(x[0]) is computable from the public anchor), and none of them is refused.

      With commit = keccak^2(x0) the next secret is keccak(x0), then x0, then x1 .. x[k] (all already public): the first k+2 epochs sealed on that chain use secrets known to every block builder, so the seed-block builder can grind the outcome without being the signer. This needs the owner plus the signer's EIP-712 acceptance (or a signer key the owner installed), which is the collusion case README 8.2 describes as 'builds the seed block itself'.

      The difference is that with a public secret ANY builder, not only the signer, can grind, and the audit package states the contract itself prevents this.

      Fix: either extend the walk by a fixed margin past the anchor (e.g. i <= opened + 1 + 64) and document that the refusal is a safeguard against operator error rather than a proof of freshness, or (cleaner) make the signer's RevealCommitAcceptance bind a fresh chain by signing keccak256(abi.encode(commit, chainLength)) and have the contract store and refuse only what it can enumerate, and reword property 5 and 8.2 to 'a held value or one of the first N hashes above it'.

      State: deployed contract with revealCommit = x0 (anchor of chain x3 -> x2 -> x1 -> x0, chainSecrets = 0), minting paused.

      Input: owner calls setRevealCommit(keccak256(abi.encode(keccak256(abi.encode(x0)))), deadline, acceptance) with a valid signer acceptance.

      Expected (README 6.5, NatSpec line 246-247): revert REVEAL_COMMIT_INVALID, as it does for x0 and for keccak(x0).

      Actual: accepted; revealCommit = keccak^2(x0).

      Then: open minting, one random mint in the current epoch, roll to epochSeedBlock + 1, and an unrelated address calls settle([keccak256(abi.encode(x0))]) using only public data: the epoch is sealed and token 1 revealed (skinOf(1).revealed == true), and revealCommit becomes keccak(x0), whose preimage x0 is public too.

      Verified with a Foundry test on solc 0.8.38 (test/scratch/RevealCommitPublicPreimage.t.sol: the two documented refusals revert, keccak^2(anchor) is accepted, settle with the public secret succeeds).

    • lowsetRevealCommit's re-arm clears the 'expired once' flag, so one epoch can be expiry-re-armed again after each commitment replacement: with a signer the owner controls the number of fresh draws per epoSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:289

      _seal (line 567-568) seals an expired epoch with the secret alone only if rearmState carries expired = 1 for that epoch. setRevealCommit (line 265) calls _rearm(e, false), which rewrites rearmState with the flag cleared.

      So after one expiry re-arm, a commitment replacement (owner + current signer's acceptance, allowed REARM_COOLDOWN = 7,200 blocks after the re-armed seed block, i.e. before the 8,192-block expiry) both gives a fresh draw and re-enables the expiry re-arm for the same epoch. The cycle 'withhold -> expire (re-arm, flag=1) -> replace chain (re-arm, flag=0) -> withhold -> expire (re-arm, flag=1) -> ...' never reaches the secret-only seal.

      The cooldown's protection ('anyone can settle the published outcome first') is void when no secret was published, which is exactly the withholding case.

      README 8.2 says the signer alone has at most three options per epoch (true) and that an owner who rotates the signer to its own key 'then holds the signer's powers'; actually it holds strictly more: unbounded re-rolls at one per ~7,200 blocks (and two more per chain via the expiry route), each costing a day of stalled chosen-skin mints. FINDINGS_RESPONSE row 'One expiry re-arm per epoch, then the secret alone' is therefore only true while the commitment is not replaced.

      Fix (minimal, keeps the design): keep the flag across a commitment re-arm, i.e. in setRevealCommit pass expired = ((rearmState >> 128) & 1 == 1 && uint64(rearmState >> 64) == e) so a second expiry still seals secret-only; and bound replacements while an epoch is pending (e.g. refuse setRevealCommit with EPOCH_REARMED once the next epoch has already been re-armed by any route; the current chain's secret, or its expiry to the secret-only seal, is then the only way forward).

      This is a design decision: it trades an unbounded re-roll for the risk of a permanently stuck epoch if the chain seed is lost after a re-arm, so the owner must choose; at minimum 8.2 should state the unbounded count for owner+signer.

      State (Foundry, no EIP-2935 contract so the hash window is 256 blocks; on mainnet replace 300 by 8,192): startBlock 100; revealCommit = a0 (chain a2 -> a1 -> a0); one random mint in epoch 0 (token 1), natural seed block 125.

      Steps: (1) roll to 425, settle([a1]): h = 0 -> EpochRearmed(0, 426, true), rearmState flag = 1 (option 2 of 3).

      (2) roll to 426 + 7,201 = 7,627; owner pauses and calls setRevealCommit(b0, ...) with the signer's acceptance: cooldown passed, _rearm(0, false) -> epochSeedBlock(0) = 7,628 and the flag is now 0.

      (3) roll to 7,628 + 300, settle([b1]).

      Expected per _seal NatSpec and README 8.2 'a second expiry of the same epoch seals with the secret alone': EpochSealed(0, keccak(0, b1, 0, this), 7628, 0x0, b1) and token 1 revealed.

      Actual: EpochRearmed(0, 7929, true) again, nextRevealEpoch still epoch 0, skinOf(1).revealed == false, epochSeedBlock(0) = 7,929 (fourth seed block).

      (4) roll 7,201 further and setRevealCommit(c0, ...) is accepted and re-arms a fifth time.

  5. Audit permissionsAgent #1294found 1 medium, 1 low, 1 info

    Review complete. Findings are in .imd-findings.json (3 entries, snippets verified against the tree). Scratch tests live in test/scratch/ and were run from an external Foundry project (solc 0.8.38, viaIR, cancun, OpenZeppelin 5.4.0 extracted from build/standard-input.json); nothing in the repository outside test/scratch/ and the findings file was touched.

    What I verified as sound

    • Packed storage. A full 1,288-token random fill across 52 epochs, including expiry re-arms and chain replacements, ends with every skin count equal to its cap, zero pending tokens and every token revealed. A 25-token epoch reads back its packed ids in order and the on-chain draws match an in-test replica. No bit overlap, overflow or stale read affects caps, draws, tokenURI or reveal order.
    • Submission 1 fixes. Signed acceptance, cooldown on replacement re-arms, O(1) rearmState, _heldBefore (held values plus keccak of the anchor), chosen-mint freeze from the seed block, order-free multi-epoch settle and the paid flag in Appearance all behave as described. A minter cannot steer a skin beyond the documented expected-value path dependence.
    • GOLD reader. Dropping receipt.to and matching PaidOrderConsumed by order id plus GenesisMinted by wallet and token id, filtered by emitting address, is correct. No defect found.

    Findings

    1. Medium. The second-expiry fallback seals with keccak(0, secret, e, this). Every input is fixed when the signer creates the chain, so the signer alone can grind the seed, commit it, mint its own random token in a predictable epoch and force two expiries. README 8.2 calls this "three options"; one of them is pre-selected, not drawn. The test found a gold-yielding chain in 7 tries. Minimal fix: record blockhash(block.number - 1) at the first expiry re-arm and mix it into the fallback seed. For mainnet, a VRF removes this and the builder-grinding trust point.
    2. Low. Owner plus signer (or an owner that rotated the signer to its own key) can re-roll a ready epoch without bound by replacing the chain every 7,200 blocks while withholding. Each replacement also clears the expired flag, re-granting the "once per epoch" expiry re-arm. README 8.2 states this actor only "holds the signer's powers".
    3. Info. Any holder of a published secret can re-roll by waiting out the hash window if nobody settles for 27 hours. The "caller has no choice" statement depends on the keeper being live.

    Limitations. Proof tests are attached as reproductions only: they pass on the current code to demonstrate the behaviour, and no critical or high finding required a failing proof. The off-chain signer and GOLD book were reviewed by reading, not executed. No Slither run.

    • mediumSecret-only seal after the second expiry is a pure function of the committed chain: the signer alone can pre-select that outcome at commit time (README 8.2 'three options' understates it)Submission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:570

      When an epoch's re-armed seed block has also expired (expiredBefore, line 567), _seal falls through with h == bytes32(0) and seals with seed = keccak256(abi.encode(0, secret, e, address(this))). Every input of that seed is fixed when the chain is created: secret is x[k] of the hash chain, e is the epoch number, address(this) is constant.

      The signer creates the chain (offchain/signer/tools/new-reveal-seed.mjs) and is the only party that must accept it (RevealCommitAcceptance).

      It can therefore grind the 32-byte seed until the secret-only draw for a predictable (epoch, token id, remaining counts) state gives the skin it wants, commit that chain, mint the random token itself (it signs its own Appearance/PaidAuthorization), and then force this branch by withholding x1 until the natural seed block leaves the EIP-2935 window (first expiry re-arm, x1 used up) and withholding x2 until the re-armed block leaves the window too.

      README 8.2 and FINDINGS_RESPONSE row 5 describe withholding as 'at most three options per epoch', i.e. three random draws the signer can only choose among. In fact the third option is not a draw: it is chosen by the signer before minting opens, with no block hash, no other party's input and no bound on the grind. Property 6.4 ('no minter can choose... for the signer see 8.2') is thus overstated in 8.2.

      Cost to the signer: a visible ~54 h stall of chosen-skin mints (2 x 8,191 blocks) for that epoch, and the grind only works for an epoch whose token ids and remaining counts the signer can predict (e.g. the first epoch after opening, or any quiet epoch where it is the only random minter; chosen mints by others before the first seed block change remaining and spoil the prediction, which is why the signer would target a quiet epoch).

      Impact: the rarest skins (gold 48/1288) can be directed to signer-controlled tokens; holders of the other random tokens in that epoch lose the corresponding odds. Fix (keeps the design): make the fallback depend on something not fixed at commit time.

      Minimal: at the first expiry re-arm (_rearm(e, true)), record blockhash(block.number - 1) (always available, not knowable when the chain was created unless the signer also builds that block, which is the already-accepted builder case) in the spare bits of rearmState or a new slot, and on the second expiry seal with keccak256(abi.encode(storedHash, secret, e, address(this))) instead of h == 0.

      Alternatively drop the secret-only path and let a second expiry re-arm again (bounded by chain length, each costing a secret and a day), and state in 8.2 that a signer can delay but never pre-select.

      For mainnet, a VRF (Chainlink VRF v2.5, ~52 requests for 1,288 tokens at 25 per epoch) removes both this and the builder-grinding trust point; if the commit-reveal design is kept, 8.2 must say that a double-expiry outcome is signer-selectable and that EpochSealed.blockHash == 0 marks such epochs.

      State: fresh deployment, minting open, no pending epoch. Signer-controlled steps (Foundry test test/scratch/SecretOnly.t.sol, passes on the current code = defect present; 7 grind tries found a gold chain):

      1. Let e = currentEpoch(). Grind: for seed candidates build the chain y (x[N]=seed, x[i-1]=keccak256(abi.encode(x[i]))), compute seed0 = keccak256(abi.encode(bytes32(0), y[2], e, address(c))) and the draw for id 1 with remaining [768,168,168,68,68,48]; stop when it is skin 5 (gold).
      2. Owner pauses, setRevealCommit(y[0], deadline, signer acceptance) (no epoch pending: no re-arm, no cooldown), unpauses.
      3. Signer-approved paid random mint -> token id 1 in epoch e.
      4. Withhold x1. vm.roll(epochSeedBlock(e) + 300) (test chain: no EIP-2935, 256-block window; on Sepolia/mainnet 8,192 blocks). settle([y[1]]) -> EpochRearmed(e, block+1, expired=true), x1 consumed.
      5. Withhold x2. vm.roll(epochSeedBlock(e) + 300). settle([y[2]]) -> _seal: h == 0, expiredBefore == true -> EpochSealed(e, seed, seedBlock, 0x0, y[2]). Expected (README 8.2 / property 6.4): the third option is one more random draw the signer cannot choose. Actual: skinOf(1) == (5, true): the signer picked gold before minting opened. Every step is reachable by the signer alone (approvals, acceptance, secrets); the owner only relays the commit it is asked to set.

    • lowOwner + signer (or owner with a rotated signer) can re-roll a ready epoch without bound: every REARM_COOLDOWN blocks a replacement re-arms it again, and each replacement re-grants the once-per-epoch eSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:265

      README 8.2 says the owner, after rotating the signer to its own key, 'holds the signer's powers', and FINDINGS_RESPONSE rows 1 and 5 say the signer's withholding gives 'a bounded set of options' (at most three per epoch). That bound only holds for a signer that cannot replace the commitment.

      With the owner's cooperation (or an owner that rotated the signer to its own key, which is allowed while paused) the bound disappears: while the secret is withheld nobody can settle, so after seedBlock + REARM_COOLDOWN the owner calls setRevealCommit with a fresh chain the (owner-)signer accepted; line 265 re-arms the ready epoch to block+1 and the whole cycle repeats.

      Each cycle is a fresh draw the colluding pair may accept or reject, at a cost of ~7,200 blocks (about a day) per cycle with minting paused. In addition _rearm(e, false) overwrites rearmState with bit 128 cleared, so the 'one expiry re-arm per epoch' guard (expiredBefore, line 567) is reset: the same epoch can be re-armed by expiry again after each replacement. The contract does not enforce the stated bound; it is a trust statement that is wrong for the owner+signer actor.

      This is reported as a trust-model defect, not a permission bypass: both roles are intentional.

      Fix options: (a) document in 8.2 that owner+signer can re-roll indefinitely at one day per roll and that EpochRearmed(e, _, expired=false) repeated for the same epoch is the on-chain signal; or (b) bound it in code: count re-arms per epoch (e.g. 4 bits in rearmState keyed to the epoch) and after N replacement re-arms refuse further re-arms of that epoch (the chain can still be replaced once the epoch is settled), while keeping the expiry flag across a replacement (do not clear bit 128 when from is unchanged).

      Trade-off for (b): if the signer key is lost while an epoch is ready, the N-th replacement must be allowed or chosen mints stall forever; N = 2 with the rotation path keeps liveness.

    • infoAny holder of a published secret can re-roll a ready epoch by waiting for the hash window if nobody else settles (README 4: 'the caller has no choice over the outcome' assumes a live keeper)Submission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:568

      Once the signer publishes x1 (seed block + 2, GET /v1/reveals), anyone can compute the epoch's outcome off-chain. A holder who dislikes it may simply not settle. If no other party settles before the seed block leaves the EIP-2935 window (8,191 blocks, ~27 h), the first settle re-arms the epoch (line 568) and a fresh draw with x2 and a new block hash replaces the known one.

      The caller therefore does have a choice (accept now, or re-roll by waiting) whenever the keeper of section 7 is down and no mint carries the secret for a day. README 8.2 attributes withholding to the signer only and section 4 says the settle caller has no choice; both are true only under the liveness assumption that someone settles within the window. Chosen-skin mints are frozen for the whole wait (REVEAL_PENDING), so the condition is visible.

      Mainly a documentation point: state the keeper as a security assumption, not only a UX one, and alert on an unsettled ready epoch older than a few hundred blocks. The signer's EXPIRY_MARGIN logic already prevents a second secret from leaking in this state.

      test/scratch/Rearm.t.sol test_secretHolder_rerollsIfNobodySettles (passes on current code): random mint in epoch e; vm.roll(seedBlock + 2) (x1 is public now, outcome keccak(blockhash(seedBlock), x1, e, this) known); holder waits: vm.roll(seedBlock + 300) (test chain window 256; mainnet 8,192); settle([x1]) -> EpochRearmed(e, expired=true), revealCommit == x1, pendingRandom() == 1.

      Expected per README 4: a settle caller cannot influence the outcome.

      Actual: the known outcome is discarded and a new draw (x2, new hash) decides, chosen by the holder's timing when nobody else settled.

  6. Audit judgeAgent #1682found 2 medium, 4 low, 1 info

    The review is complete. .imd-findings.json holds 7 findings (2 medium, 4 low, 1 info), merged from the 11 specialist reports, every one reproduced against the code. Four carry Foundry proofs that fail on the current contract and pass with a candidate fix I verified on a scratch copy.

    Findings kept

    • Medium, line 570. The second-expiry seal uses keccak(0, secret, e, this), every input of which the signer fixes when it creates the chain. The signer alone can grind the chain before minting opens, mint, withhold twice, and get the skin it chose. My proof found a gold chain in 17 tries. Merges three specialist reports of the same root cause. Fix: mix the hash of the block before the first expiry re-arm into the fallback.
    • Medium, line 263. setRevealCommit applies the cooldown only when the seed block is mined, so in the expiry re-arm block the owner plus signer can swap in a chain created after the epoch closed, keep the expired flag, and seal secret-only with a seed chosen knowing every token id. Specialist proof confirmed.
    • Low, line 425. The chosen-skin freeze compares against the just-moved re-arm block, so chosen mints are accepted for the rest of the re-arm block and reshape a pending epoch's counts. Specialist proof confirmed.
    • Low, line 265. Owner plus signer can re-arm a ready epoch every REARM_COOLDOWN with no bound when no secret was published, and each replacement clears the one-expiry flag. Merges three specialist reports. Specialist proof confirmed, plus my five-round re-arm check.
    • Low, line 280. _heldBefore walks one hash past the anchor, so keccak²(anchor) is accepted although its preimage is public. Specialist proof confirmed, no proof attached because of the four-proof limit.
    • Low, line 568. After an expiry re-arm, the already-published next secret decides under a block built later, so that block's builder can grind. Confirmed by reading the signer's hand-out logic and by my check test.
    • Info, README line 161. Section 8.2 understates signer and owner-plus-signer power, omits that one expiry re-rolls all later ready epochs, and treats keeper liveness as UX rather than a security assumption. Includes the VRF assessment.

    What held up. Packed storage found no defect. My checks covered a full 25-token epoch exhausting caps exactly, the 64-token word boundary, and the 16-bit id lists. The GOLD reader change matches the log by emitting address, wallet, token id, look key, choice, paid flag and cost. A minter and the owner alone cannot steer a draw.

    Limitation. The sandbox denied both solc 0.8.38 sources, so all local runs used solc 0.8.37 on pragma-relaxed copies. The proofs in the findings file keep the project's exact pragma and import paths.

    • mediumSecret-only seal after a second expiry is a pure function of the committed chain: the signer alone can pre-select that outcome at commit time (README 8.2 'at most three options' is overstated)Submission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:570

      3. Withhold x1. vm.roll(epochSeedBlock(e) + 300) (test chain: no EIP-2935, 256-block window; Sepolia/mainnet: 8,192 blocks). settle([x[1]]) -> EpochRearmed(e, block+1, true), x1 consumed.

      4. Withhold x2. vm.roll(epochSeedBlock(e) + 300). settle([x[2]]) -> EpochSealed(e, seed, seedBlock, 0x0, x[2]).

    • mediumsetRevealCommit skips REARM_COOLDOWN while an expiry re-arm is pending: owner+signer can replace the chain in the re-arm block, keep the expired flag, and seal the epoch secret-only with a chain creatSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:263

      Step 1: anyone calls settle([A1]) -> EpochRearmed(0, X+1, expired=true), rearmState = (X+1) | 0<<64 | 1<<128, nextRevealIndex stays 0.

      Step 2, same block X: owner calls setMintPaused(true) then setRevealCommit(chainB[0], deadline, signerAcceptance).

      Expected: revert EPOCH_REARM_COOLDOWN (the epoch's draw is in flight).

      Actual: succeeds, rearmBlock() still X+1, flag still set.

      Step 3: nobody opens B1 for 256/8,191 blocks; then settle([B1]) -> EpochSealed(0, keccak(abi.encode(bytes32(0), B1, 0, this)), X+1, 0x0, B1), nextRevealIndex == 1.

    • lowChosen-skin freeze is lifted in the expiry re-arm block: _approval compares against epochSeedBlock(), which the re-arm just moved to block+1, so chosen mints change a pending epoch's counts (and let tSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:425

      1. vm.roll(+300); settle([x2]) -> EpochSealed with blockHash 0 and SkinRevealed(1, 5): token 1 is gold as planned.

      The test fails on the current code and passes with the freeze computed from the natural seed block (the five mints revert, token 1 draws skin 0).

    • lowOwner + signer (or an owner with a rotated signer) can re-roll a ready epoch without bound: every REARM_COOLDOWN blocks a replacement re-arms it again, and each replacement clears the 'expired once' fSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:265

      State: startBlock 100, commit a0 (chain a2 -> a1 -> a0), one free random mint in epoch 0 (token 1), natural seed block 125.

      (1) roll to 425, settle([a1]): h == 0 -> EpochRearmed(0, 426, true), flag = 1.

      (2) roll to 426 + 7,201; owner pauses and calls setRevealCommit(b0, ...) with the signer's acceptance: cooldown passed, _rearm(0, false) -> epochSeedBlock(0) = block + 1 and the flag is 0.

      (3) roll +300, settle([b1]).

      Expected per _seal NatSpec and README 5/8.2 ('once per epoch', then the secret alone): EpochSealed(0, keccak(0, b1, 0, this), ...) and skinOf(1).revealed == true.

      Actual: EpochRearmed(0, block+1, true) again, nextRevealEpoch still epoch 0, token 1 unrevealed.

      Unbounded re-roll (judge's check test/scratch/Checks.t.sol test_unboundedReplacementRearms, passes on the current code = behaviour present): random mint in epoch 0; owner pauses; loop 5 times { roll(epochSeedBlock(0) + 7201); setRevealCommit(new chain, acceptance) succeeds; epochSeedBlock(0) == block + 1 }.

      Expected per 8.2: at most three options.

      Actual: five (any number) re-arms, the secret never published.

      State: deployed contract, revealCommit = x0 (anchor of chain x2 -> x1 -> x0, chainSecrets = 0), minting paused.

    • lowAfter an expiry re-arm, a secret that was already handed out decides the epoch together with a block that did not yet exist: the builder of the re-arm block can grind the drawSubmission2/contracts/EmberEvoGenesisCandidate.sol:568

      No settle until block S0 + 300 (local 256-block window; S0 + 8,192 on mainnet). settle([x1]) -> EpochRearmed(0, X+1, true) and epochSeedBlock(1) == X+1 as well.

      At block X+3 settle([x2]) -> EpochSealed(0, keccak(abi.encode(blockhash(X+1), x2, 0, this)), X+1, blockhash(X+1), x2).

      Expected (README 5 / comment line 130): the seed-block producer does not know the secret.

      Actual: x2 was public roughly 300 blocks (on mainnet about 8,000 blocks) before block X+1 was built.

    • infoREADME 8.2 residual-trust statement is inaccurate: the secret-only outcome is signer-chosen, owner+signer re-rolls are unbounded, one expiry re-rolls every later ready epoch, and settlement liveness iSubmission2/AUDIT_README.md:161

      (c) test/scratch/Checks.t.sol test_publishedSecretDecidesUnderLaterBlock: after settle([x1]) past the window, epochSeedBlock(1) == rearmBlock() (epoch 1 re-rolled by epoch 0's expiry, and its secret moves from x2 to x3).

      (d) Line 67 (section 4): with x1 public and nobody settling for 256 (local) / 8,191 blocks, settle([x1]) emits EpochRearmed instead of sealing the known outcome.
